The elevator chimed and the doors slid open.
They walked into the apartment.
At that exact moment, both of their bracelets vibrated violently, projecting a holographic message: *Well, well! It's been over ten days! Now that you're finally reunited, shouldn't you celebrate with a long, passionate embrace?*
Sloane completely ignored it.
She was in zero mood to play games.
Between Director Thorne stealing her academic credit this morning, Landon trying to force a mansion on her this evening, and a husband who had vanished off the face of the earth for two weeks...
It felt like every single aspect of her life was entirely out of her control.
Without a word, she walked into her bedroom and shut the door.
Logan dropped his duffel bag onto the floor and stood in the middle of the living room.
She was clearly furious with him.
Should he go in there and try to explain?
Fortunately, she emerged a few minutes later.
She walked over to the kitchen island to pour herself a glass of water.
Logan intentionally stepped in her way.
"Excuse me," Sloane said coldly. "I need a drink."
Logan gave her a soft, teasing smile. "You look incredibly upset. Is it because I was gone for so long?"
Sloane hesitated.
His disappearance was definitely part of it, but it was just the tipping point of a miserable day.
"Can we talk?" he asked gently.
"Let me get a glass of water first."
Logan smoothly took the glass from her hand, filled it from the dispenser, and offered it back to her. "Here you go, sweetheart."
Sloane was slightly disarmed by his easy charm. She took a long, slow sip just to avoid his intense gaze.
Seeing the tension in her shoulders ease a fraction, he pressed on. "Did something happen while I was gone? You seem incredibly stressed."
Sloane didn't want to vent to him.
Complaining about hospital politics to him wouldn't fix her stolen authorship.
And bringing up Landon's obsessive need to buy her affection was completely out of the question.
To anyone else, complaining about being gifted a mansion would just sound wildly ungrateful.
"Nothing happened. I'm fine," she lied smoothly.
"Then you're just furious with me."
Logan took the glass out of her hand, set it on the counter, and pulled her firmly into his chest.
Taken completely by surprise, Sloane gasped as his massive arms locked around her. The sheer heat of his body and his dark, masculine scent overwhelmed her. She shoved against his chest, but he was like a brick wall.
After a brief struggle, the fight drained out of her.
She realized, with a heavy sigh, that she desperately needed to be held.
