"Tell me exactly how you managed to pull this off," Sloane demanded.
The waiter brought over their orders. Landon tightened his grip on his coffee mug, staring down into the dark liquid in silence.
The truth was, he had essentially burned his relationship with his mother to the ground over this property.
If she wasn't currently overseas, she probably would have hired lawyers to bury him.
Before Landon could formulate a lie, Sloane's phone buzzed sharply.
It was a call from Landon's mother.
She didn't tell him who was calling. "I need to take this."
Assuming it was the hospital, Landon stayed seated.
Sloane stepped out onto the sidewalk before answering. "Aunt Caroline."
"Sloane, is Landon with you? He's completely lost his mind. He's trying to give you the Vance Estate."
"Yes, he's here."
"Sloane, I know how much you loved your grandmother, and I know you grew up in that house. I understand the sentimental attachment, and your uncle is too soft to say no. But that property belongs to the Vance family. Your uncle and your mother are the primary beneficiaries, not you."
"You don't have to explain it to me," Sloane interrupted calmly. "I understand perfectly. I never asked for the house, and I have no intention of taking it."
"Well, Landon is threatening to cut ties with us entirely if we block the transfer! He's even offering to buy out our shares with his own money! This isn't just about cash, Sloane. That estate is family legacy. Once it's gone, it's gone."
"You're right. He's being incredibly reckless. He never consulted me about any of this. I'll make sure he backs down."
Sloane walked back into the cafe, leveling a hard glare at Landon.
Over the last two years, his behavior toward her had become dangerously erratic—hot and cold, intensely protective one moment and terrifyingly possessive the next. Now he was trying to hand her a multi-million-dollar estate.
Was this all just pity because she was an orphan?
"Just sign the papers, Sloane," Landon urged softly, sliding the pen toward her.
Sloane shook her head resolutely. "Landon, stop putting me in this position."
"What position?"
She let out a bitter laugh. "I appreciate the thought, but you know damn well your mother despises this idea. Forcing me to sign this is just making me the villain in your family war."
"Was that her on the phone? Ignore her. I'll handle my mother."
"How do you still not get it?" Sloane snapped. "I am perfectly fine. I have a home. I don't need a mansion, and I never felt entitled to Grandma's estate. Please, just drop it!"
Seeing her absolute refusal, Landon pivoted desperately. "Fine. Then let me buy you a new house. Whatever you want."
"I don't want your money, Landon. I'm already living somewhere."
"Sloane..." he pleaded, but she cut him off with a ruthlessness she rarely used. "If you try to force another gift on me, I am cutting contact with you completely. I refuse to be indebted to anyone!"
