Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 73

Sloane couldn't stand Serena's shrill voice and wanted to find another spot to look for Logan.

She wasn't someone who lacked self-respect, and she desperately hoped Logan would show up soon to bail her out and give her an explanation.

But Serena was relentless, her voice raising to an obnoxious volume. "Sloane, you used to say you hated attending these kinds of events! You called them fake, just rich people putting on a show. So what are you doing here today?"

Thanks to Serena's shouting, several guests cast disdainful glances in Sloane's direction.

Sloane couldn't help but glare at her.

What an absolute masterclass in character assassination!

Looking smug, Serena continued with exaggerated pity. "Oh, I get it. You just really like the pastries here, don't you? You could've just asked me! I would have brought a doggy bag home for you."

Sloane let out a cold scoff. "Brought it home for me? Remind me, who exactly am I to you?"

"You..." Naturally, Serena couldn't admit that Sloane was her sister.

Everyone in Capital City's elite circle believed Silas and Madeline only had one son and one daughter. They knew nothing about Sloane.

Unwilling to dig her own grave, Serena pivoted loudly, "Even though we barely know each other, giving you some leftover pastries is the least I could do. It's still better than what that mechanic husband of yours can provide. Speaking of which, where is he? Did he scurry off to some corner to steal more food?"

"Honestly, people like you are unbelievable. You constantly act like you despise the wealthy, but the second there's a free meal, you come sniffing around like a stray."

Serena's sycophantic friends let out exaggerated laughs to back her up.

Lily chimed in loudly, "Sloane, you totally mooched off our tickets when we played The Labyrinth last time, and we let it slide. But now you're here crashing a VIP gala? You have zero shame!"

The surrounding crowd chuckled in amusement.

Sloane's fists clenched tightly at her sides.

But she refused to explain herself.

She didn't know most of these people anyway, so what was the point of defending her honor to strangers?

Ignoring Serena, she tried to walk away to find Logan, but Serena reached out and grabbed her arm.

"Sloane, don't leave yet! You've only had a few little sweets. The main courses haven't even come out yet. I heard tonight's menu is Michelin-star quality. At least try some before you run off. Consider it my treat."
