Sloane hit pause on the washing machine and tossed two of her own shirts in to wash them together.
She glanced over at Logan's bedroom. The door was shut tight, and there wasn't a sound coming from inside.
He was probably already dead to the world.
She sat on the sofa, waiting for the cycle to finish.
Finally, the machine chimed, signaling it was done.
Sloane pulled all the damp clothes out and dropped them into the laundry basket.
As she hung the garments up to dry, she meticulously checked the tags on his clothes.
Feeling like a complete spy, she glanced over her shoulder at the living room after hanging each piece, terrified Logan might suddenly walk out.
Once all the clothes and socks were hung, Sloane bolted back to her room.
Grabbing a pen and a notepad, she sketched out every single logo and brand name she could remember from the tags.
When she was done, she pulled up her phone and searched the logos.
Every single one belonged to ultra-luxury, high-performance tactical and outdoor brands.
His socks alone cost upwards of fifty dollars a pair.
Not to mention the shirts and cargo pants, which easily retailed for thousands of dollars each.
Sloane tore the page from her notepad, crumpled it up, and opened an online AI assistant. She typed: *Hypothetically, if a guy claims to work as an auto mechanic but frequently travels overseas for days at a time, and exclusively wears luxury tactical gear, could he have a secret identity?*
The AI instantly generated a response: *Red flag! This individual absolutely has a second identity.*
*1. He might be involved in illicit transnational operations, such as smuggling.*
*2. He could be a high-level enforcer or fixer for a powerful boss. The mechanic job is likely just a front.*
*3. Money laundering or underground banking operations.*
Sloane sat frozen on the edge of her bed.
Her mind flashed back to the brutal scar on Logan's head.
He had claimed it was from a street fight.
It was obvious now—Logan was far from ordinary.
And Zane was probably part of it, too.
*
After returning, Logan crashed hard, falling into a deep, endless sleep filled with violent dreams.
In the dream, he was executing a cross-border raid, hunting Zahir down through the desert.
At the climax of the nightmare, he even pulled the trigger and executed him.
But when his eyes snapped open, he realized it was just a dream.
