Sloane decided to pretend she was deaf.
She was completely drained and had zero patience for Serena's theatrics.
But Serena hopped out of the car and sprinted into her path. "Sloane, I am talking to you! Are you literally deaf?"
Sloane looked at her deadpan. "No, I just have absolutely no desire to acknowledge your existence."
"You—" Serena flared up, but remembering who was waiting in the car, she swallowed her rage. "Silas is here. He's waiting for you. He needs to talk to you!"
Sloane's gaze shifted to the sleek black SUV.
Silas Sutton sat in the plush captain's chair in the middle row, dressed immaculately in a tailored black suit. Though in his fifties, he looked a decade younger.
As a child, she had always viewed him as a towering, invincible figure. She used to pray that he would just bend down and give her a hug.
Now, his posture wasn't as straight as it used to be, and she had long stopped waiting for that hug.
She didn't need it anymore.
But out of basic biological obligation, she walked over to the open door. "What do you want?"
Silas's face was grim. "I called you over a dozen times today, and you ignored every single one!"
Sloane pulled out her phone, checking the lock screen. "I was in the operating room all day. I wasn't allowed to have my phone."
"Then you must be starving. Let's head out to the countryside and grab dinner while we talk. Get in."
Sloane immediately rejected the offer. "I'll just grab a sandwich on my own."
"You've been in surgery all day. A cold sandwich isn't a proper meal. You need real nutrients," Silas urged softly.
Hearing the words *real nutrients*, Sloane's head snapped up.
The phrase sounded terrifyingly close to genuine paternal concern.
Was he actually worried about her?
Serena shoved her forcefully from behind. "Just get in already! If you keep stalling, the restaurant is going to close."
Caught off guard, Sloane stumbled into the leather seats.
