Macy curled into Dan's embrace, playing the perfect picture of a fragile damsel clinging to her television hero.
Dan reveled in the role.
With one arm securely wrapped around Macy's waist and the other firing wildly at AR beasts, Macy was practically flying through the air as he pivoted.
Sloane watched, utterly dumbfounded.
She figured she definitely wasn't getting the Macy treatment.
She selected a sleek handgun, planning to rely on herself.
Before she could even figure out how the safety worked, a powerful arm clamped around her waist, lifting her effortlessly off her feet.
"Watch out!" Logan's voice was edged with adrenaline, his warm breath grazing her ear. Instinctively clutching his shirt, Sloane watched as he raised his gun and fired blindly over her shoulder.
In the AR display, a python as thick as a tree trunk thrashed in a pool of digital blood. The sheer realism made her shriek and bury her face into his chest.
"Don't be scared!" Logan murmured with a low chuckle, his palm patting her waist lightly.
The warmth and pressure seeped through her thin shirt, sending a sudden, intoxicating tingle down her spine.
Before she could fully process the sensation, a piercing eagle cry echoed from above. Logan shoved her flush against his chest, aimed upward with his free hand, and unleashed a volley of shots. Simulated warm blood sprayed across her vision, prompting her to grip him even tighter.
Her senses were entirely overwhelmed by his clean, masculine scent.
All around them, the less coordinated couples were getting ambushed left and right, their screams echoing through the trees.
Some women yelled at their husbands, "Shoot the damn thing!"
The men fired back, "Stop dodging right into my line of sight!"
Whenever this happened, the GFA smartwatch would chirp: "Please refrain from complaining to your spouse. The goal is not to win, but to foster cooperation! In life-or-death moments, hold each other tightly and vow never to let go!"
Eventually, the bickering died down.
Sloane and Logan were getting thoroughly hooked.
Sloane even managed to shoot a small creature lunging for her—she wasn't sure if it was a fox or a wolf, but it looked rabid.
"Look out!"
Her triumph didn't even last a second before Logan tackled her to the forest floor. Shielding her entirely with his body, he aimed his assault rifle at a charging tiger.
