Naomi's mind was full of question marks. “Wait, how is that a confession?”
She was just trying to think of a way to help Ronald.
Maybe the plan was a bit awkward for her and Lennon, but it wasn't a big deal, was it?
They were just pretending, after all. It's not like they were actually getting married for Ronald's sake.
“How is it not?”
“There are plenty of ways you could have helped him, right? Why was that the first idea that popped into your head?”
“You could have pretended to be his older brother and sister, just picking him up together. No one would have asked questions, and you wouldn't have had to explain. But you subconsciously blurted out 'pretend to be his mom and dad.' You know what that's called? A Freudian slip!”
Naomi's eyes went wide.
“No, I didn't think that at all, I...”
Patricia looked Naomi up and down a few times, a teasing expression on her face. “Why are you getting so flustered? Are you that worried Lennon will misunderstand?”
Naomi shook her head so vigorously it was like a bobblehead.
“It's not that...”
“I just think the whole thing is so awkward.”
Naomi didn't know how to describe the feeling in her heart to Patricia.
She scratched her head in frustration, her face scrunched up. “Ugh, I don't know how to explain it...”
The more Patricia watched, the more suspicious Naomi's behavior seemed.
“Have you ever heard the saying?”
“The more you care, the more cautious you become. Looking at you now, it's obvious you've started to fall for Lennon. That's why you're being so careful, so afraid of upsetting him.”
Naomi pressed her lips together.
“He's my boss...”
Shouldn't she be careful? Her job was on the line.
Naomi lowered her gaze, Patricia's words echoing deafeningly in her mind.
She had never realized how strangely she'd been acting since meeting Lennon.
Hearing it from Patricia's mouth left her feeling completely lost.
“Why is this happening...”
Naomi didn't understand. In her eyes, Lennon was just that mysterious, unapproachable stranger from the Spencer family.
When did it all start to change?
“You're the one who should be asking yourself that.”
Patricia patted Naomi's head. “When exactly did you start paying so much attention to Lennon?”
“Think about it. Were you ever even this concerned about Zebulon?”
“You even skipped Zebulon's birthday party for Lennon. Is that something the old you would have done?”
