Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 27

Naomi paused.

What rotten luck, she thought.

She hadn't expected to run into Zebulon and Tiffany right outside her own dorm.

Was the campus really so small that they had to flaunt their romance right here?

“Naomi?”

Her roommate and best friend, Patricia Flores, glanced at her, surprised by the sudden stop. “Why’d you stop? Did you forget something?”

Naomi pushed down her annoyance and forced a smile at Patricia. “It’s nothing, just remembered something. Let’s get to class.”

She didn't want to be late for the first class on the first day of the semester.

Even though college offered more freedom than high school, Naomi's major was one of the university's most prestigious. The professors were all big names in their fields, and these experts weren't known for their patience. They'd dock points at the slightest provocation, and some students failed so consistently they ended up taking years to graduate.

Naomi had no intention of failing, retaking classes, or delaying graduation. She didn't particularly like finance, but as the only daughter, she had responsibilities she couldn't escape.

“Our first class today is with Professor Grim.”

Patricia wasn't a local from Tyra; she'd come from Koyn for university. Girls from Koyn were known for their outspoken personalities. When Patricia first met Naomi, she'd declared it was “love at first sight,” charmed by Naomi’s petite, doll-like appearance and gentle nature, which she said perfectly complemented her own. That’s how their friendship began.

Naomi could get along with anyone, mainly because her polite upbringing made it hard for her to say no. This often led to people taking advantage of her. But with Patricia around, the leeches who treated her like a personal ATM stopped coming around. Naomi was grateful, and the two gradually became the best of friends, sharing everything.

As Naomi’s best friend, Patricia knew exactly how much Naomi loved Zebulon.

Her eyes filled with rage, and without a second thought, she rolled up her sleeves, ready to march over and confront them.

“I was wondering why you were so early today! That Zebulon is such a spoiled brat who loves to sleep in. You almost got marked late and called out by the professor a few times because of him. I thought maybe he’d finally grown a conscience and brought you early so you wouldn't get in trouble. But instead, he couldn't care less if you're late and is chauffeuring Tiffany around? Did he get his head slammed in a door?”

Patricia’s family was prominent back in Koyn, and with her fiery temper, no one at school dared to mess with her. Zebulon and his friends were usually polite to her, but Naomi knew they didn't really care about her family's status. If those rich boys really wanted to ruin someone, they had their ways.

Naomi didn’t want her best friend to get into a fight with them on her behalf, so she quickly grabbed her arm.

“Patricia, calm down! I’ll explain everything.”
