Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 43

Naomi opened her mouth to speak, then closed it.

She had a feeling the caregiver didn't really believe that she and Lennon weren't a couple.

She was just humoring her.

Naomi wanted to explain further, but she felt that protesting too much would only make her look more suspicious in the caregiver’s eyes. In the end, she gave up and nodded. “Yes, please. Thank you.”

The caregiver waved her hand with infectious enthusiasm. “Don’t you mention it! I’m here to take care of you. If you need anything at all, just let me know. I may not have many skills, but I’m an expert at looking after people. I guarantee you’ll have gained a few pounds by the time you leave this hospital.”

Naomi stared at her.

Thanks, but no thanks…

When Patricia found out Naomi was in the hospital, she rushed over right after her last class.

“How on earth did you end up in the hospital? You scared me to death! I couldn’t reach you all day and was debating whether to mark you as present in class. But the professor didn’t mention you, so I figured you must have gotten an excused absence. I thought you’d gone home.”

Patricia’s arrival brought a lively energy to the quiet room. The caregiver, ever the gracious host, offered Patricia fruit and snacks and then launched into a detailed account of Naomi’s condition.

Seeing that the caregiver knew more than she did, Naomi just smiled and let her talk.

“Blood loss? What on earth happened?”

This was something the caregiver couldn't answer. Naomi suggested she take a break, and the woman, sensing their need for privacy, quickly left the room.

Only then did Naomi tell Patricia what had happened.

“That bastard Zebulon!”

Naomi had spent her entire life living up to her parents’ expectations, never feeling a sense of freedom. Trapped in the rubble of that earthquake, she had paradoxically felt free for the first time.

And… the boy’s voice was so soothing. The earthquake had left her with severe psychological trauma, and she suffered from terrible insomnia. But she discovered that if she recalled the sound of his voice in her mind, she could fall asleep quickly.

Because of that, she felt she had a special connection to him.

“Wait a minute. You keep saying ‘the boy,’ which means you weren’t sure it was Zebulon, were you?”

“So why did you follow Zebulon to Tyra and chase after him for all these years?”

Naomi bit her lip and said softly, “I went back and asked the rescue team later. They gave me a watch they found. It was Zebulon’s.”

A complex expression crossed Patricia’s face.
