Chapter 14 Faded Clues and Missed Chances
Finally, she closed the file. When she looked up again, her eyes were cold as ice.
There was no such case at all.
That’s why Derek never reported it to the police.
Everything was a lie.
But she had seen her mother get hurt. She had watched her die right in front of her eyes. Those moments were real–painfully real.
Derek had hidden the truth. He had staged an entire scene. Chances were, the so–called culprit from back hen wasn’t dead. He had never existed in the first place.
What was he after?
Could he be the real killer?
‘Boss, don’t blame yourself,” Tess said.
All these years, Stella had never stopped working to grow stronger. She had taken her time, scared of alerting the enemy and losing any evidence. She hadn’t slowed down until she was powerful enough to ake down her foes in one strike–powerful enough to keep anyone from hurting her again.
Bringing up the past was undoubtedly reopening her old wounds.
Tess knew Stella wouldn’t have let her dig into this if she wasn’t ready.
I plan to go investigate Lucky Town–the place you used to live,” Tess said.
Stella nodded slightly. “Derek moved to Lucky Town later. Go find out where he lived before that.”
‘Got it.”
‘Boss, did you get the paternity test results?” Tess asked.
‘I’m not Derek’s daughter,” Stella replied.
‘I knew it,” Tess said, regretting not kicking Derek a few more times when she had the chance.
“Head to Lucky Town first,” Stella told her.
“Okay.”
Stella closed her eyes.
She should look into missing persons named Shaw who were around her mother’s age.
Her mother’s accent had sounded like she was from Azure Peak City. Could she have been a local here?

“Get some sleep first. I’ll be on my way.” Tess said.
“Hmm.”
Fmished
After Tess left, Stella kept her eyes closed. She replayed the five years she’d lived with her mother over and over in her mind, hoping to find more clues hidden in those memories.
Eventually, exhaustion took over, and she fell asleep.
At the entrance of Imperial Crest Towers, Elias had arrived at six in the morning.
He waited there–from sunrise to sunset.
He spent the entire day waiting, but never caught a glimpse of the figure he’d been longing for.
Leo had stayed with him all day, medical kit in hand. At first, he’d been curious. He’d wanted to see what kind of girl could be a hundred times more beautiful than the famous celebrity Iris.
By the end, his patience had run out.
“Elias, you’re a patient. You need to rest,” Leo urged.
Elias‘ handsome face was clouded with disappointment.
“Gideon, buy me an apartment in Imperial Crest Towers,” he ordered.
“Right away, sir.”
Gideon couldn’t believe he still hadn’t found her, even though he knew she lived here.
For the first time, he felt utterly useless.
But after so many failed attempts, he had a hunch that Elias‘ savior was no ordinary woman.
Leo yawned. “Elias, it’s getting late.”
“Let’s go,” Elias said, his voice full of defeat.
Early the next morning, Elias was moving in. Gideon directed the movers as they carried his things inside.
Elias sat in his car, attending a meeting over the phone.
Every now and then, he glanced out the window. Each time, his eyes were filled with hope–hope that faded into disappointment.
Just as he hung his head, the car he’d been searching for so desperately passed by.
When he looked up again, it was already gone. He couldn’t even make out the license plate number.
“Mr. Cross, we’re all moved in,” Gideon reported.

Hmm.”
“Aren’t you going to go upstairs?” Gideon asked.
Elias stared at the passing cars. “Has she not gone out yet?”
“I don’t think so, sir.”
At that. Elias frowned. A cold look swept over his face.
“Gideon, check on her right now,” he ordered.
Finished
Even though Imperial Crest Towers had strict privacy policies, Gideon managed to find out that the car had left fifteen minutes earlier.
Panic surged through him. He rushed back to Elias, head hanging low.
‘Mr. Cross, the car left here fifteen minutes ago,” he said, too scared to meet Elias‘ eyes.
He was doomed.
He’d only stopped to talk to the movers for a minute. How could it be such bad luck that the lady had left right then?
