Free money falling straight into Stella’s lap? Not even in his wildest dreams would that happen. Leo just couldn’t trust this.
“Few young Corbins have real talent these days. Your skills are obvious to everyone. I’ve seen your courage firsthand.”
Stella shook her head. “I’m not interested. Find someone else.”
“Stella, I’ll give you a week to think.”
“I can give you an answer right now-”
“Don’t refuse so fast. If you stay away, the ambitious young Corbins and elders won’t leave you alone. You’re too good; you make them look useless. Grandpa would rather pick you as heir than any of them. Do you think you won’t be in danger?”
Stella sighed in exasperation. “It’s my fault I’m good at what I do?”
“This is completely unfair,” Leo muttered.
“One question. Why did my grandmother leave the Corbins?”
She didn’t care for herself, but she asked for her father. He deserved to know.
“My grandfather will tell you once you come back.”
Sean turned and strode out of the classroom.
“Stella, I hope you’re still alive next time we meet.”
Everyone in the room heard his cold warning.
“What do you mean?” Elias‘ eyes flashed with panic.
“This is Azure Peak City. I don’t care about your Corbin clan.” Kenneth’s temper flared, and he stepped forward to fight.
“Calm down, everyone! Please!” Shane begged.
“Move aside!” Tess snapped, furious. No one hurt her boss and got away with it.
Shane stepped back nervously. These people are terrifying.
“Let them leave,” Stella ordered. The group backed down reluctantly.

“Stella, what did he say to you?”
Stella told them everything without hiding a thing.
“No way–they’re just handing you a fortune?” Tess stared in shock.
“The Corbins are tangled in politics and secrets. This is never as simple as it sounds. Besides, you don’t need their inheritance. When we marry, everything I have is yours.” Elias never wanted her in danger. He cared nothing for the money–only her safety and happiness.
“The Corbins have plenty of skilled people. Asking Stella to be the heir? It’s a trap,” Frederick said, frowning deeply. His family would never let Stella risk her life for wealth.
“Why not send Leo? There’s plenty of money. He can try,” Kenneth suggested. Everyone turned to Leo.
Leo scratched his nose awkwardly. “They said I’m not qualified.”
“Makes sense. Stella’s one of a kind. No one compares,” Kenneth boasted proudly.
Leo fell silent, annoyed.
“Boss, even if you say no, they’ll keep bothering you,” Tess sighed. Good days never last long.
“If they want trouble, I’ll give it to them. My hunt is on.”
“I’ve got your back,” Tess said, patting her chest.
“I’ll always be with you, Stella.”
“No matter what, I’m here, Stella.”
“Me too. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
“Count me in. We’ll take whoever comes on.”
Stella broke into a bright, warm smile. “With all of you, I’ll never fight alone.” She pulled them all into a tight group hug. It felt wonderful to be so loved and protected.
When Stella got home, the living room lights were on. She walked in, and Jasper looked up at her footsteps, a gentle, kind smile on his face. He took off his glasses and waved her over.
“You’re home, sweetheart.”

“Dad, why are you still up?”
“Just finishing some work.”
Stella sat beside him and glanced at his laptop.
“Are you free tomorrow?”
“I am.”
“Come with me to an underground auction.”
“Okay.”
