Chapter 26 The Fire and the Rescue

“She attacked first! I swear!”

“How dare she?” Ruby muttered, confused. She’d met Luna before–covered in bruises, stuck with a kid, too terrified to fight back.

“I don’t know. When I got there, she was hysterical–nothing like the timid woman she used to be,” Lloyd said.

Ruby finally understood.

“If anyone asks, you know nothing. My husband and I won’t forget this favor,” she promised.

“Don’t worry. I’ll keep my mouth shut tight!” Lloyd grinned.

‘Ruby… can you find a wife for my son? No teachers even come here anymore,” he begged.

‘I’ll see what I can do.”

Ruby would help if it meant keeping him quiet. As long as Luna’s death stayed buried, their little crimes wouldn’t land them in jail for long.

‘Relax! If anyone asks, I’ll say Doggy took Luna in because she was mentally unstable. Everyone knows hat! It’s nothing to worry about,” Lloyd assured her.

Watching them walk away, Stella’s body radiated cold fury.

‘Boss…”

Tess squeezed her hand, eyes filled with concern.

Even the little they’d heard was enough to suffocate. The full truth must be unspeakable.

‘Fire! There’s a fire!”

‘Help put it out!”

Chaos erupted across the village.

‘Boss, it’s that old woman’s house,” Tess said.

They both knew who’d started it.

“Let’s go help,” Stella ordered,

“Right.”

After the chaos died down, Stella and Tess headed to a cave–the address they’d beaten out of the old

woman’s son.

“Tess, call the police.”

“Boss… this place is in the middle of nowhere-”

“Not here. Somewhere safe,” Stella cut her off, her eyes icy. “I’m sending everyone trapped in this hell home.”

Her voice cracked, and her eyes reddened. Had her mother dreamed of someone coming to save her, too?

“I get it.”

Stella kicked open the wooden board blocking the cave entrance. Sunlight streamed in, illuminating the darkness.

Jax blinked, squinting into the light. Two figures dressed as nuns stood in the doorway, bathed in sunlight.

The two B–list actresses beside him lit up with hope–then dimmed just as fast.

All they could think about was being chained up, forced to bear children for the rest of their lives. Fear paralyzed them; they didn’t believe these nuns were here to help.

Tracy Mae, the woman guarding Jax and the two actresses, scrambled to her feet, terrified.

“W–Who are you?”

“Tess, get them out,” Stella said.

“On it.”

Tess rushed to the crying actresses.

Jax’s eyes darted around, panic rising.

“Who are you people?”

Tracy tried to stop them, but Stella grabbed her by the collar and dragged her aside.

“How many girls and boys are chained up in this village? Tell me everything.”

“N–None! I swear!”

Tracy’s voice shook, overwhelmed by Stella’s intensity.

“Not talking?”

“W–What are you going to do?”

“What happens to useless people?” Stella asked coldly.

Tracy turned pale.

“I’ll talk! I’ll talk!”

She forced herself to stay calm.

They are just two girls. Back in the village, they’ll never escape.

“No one’s kidnapped! We just took in poor people who had nowhere else to go!”

“I don’t care about your lies. Just tell me how many are chained up,” Stella snapped.

Tracy trembled as she spoke, “Bert at the village entrance has a volunteer teacher girl. And Jake’s wife–she got lost painting in the mountains…”

“Boss! They’re coming!”

“Go!”

The two actresses could walk, but Jax was too beaten up to move. Tess hauled him over her shoulder.

As soon as they stepped outside, a mob wielding sticks blocked their path.

“Let me go, and I’ll make your families rich for three generations!” Jax shouted.

The villagers laughed mockingly.
