Patricia and Oliver breezed back home without a care in the world. After spending a day in Riverdale, Patricia suddenly decided she wanted to visit South Africa. Oliver checked his calendar, cleared his schedule, and off they went. With a private jet, the trip was effortless and comfortable.

Neither of them thought about their daughter the whole way. It wasn’t that they were bad parents. That kid could just wear anyone out. On the plane, Patricia curled up on the sofa, wrapped in a soft blanket, glued to her latest show on the tablet. Oliver sat nearby, quietly working through his emails.

Halfway through the flight, Patricia’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and saw Lydia’s name. Without a second thought, she handed the phone to Oliver, scooting over with her blanket and tablet to keep her distance. Even from the other side of the cabin, Patricia could hear the tired sigh in Oliver’s voice.

“Hey, Mom.”

“What happened now?”

“She’s like this at home too. Just let her be. We’ll fix it later.”

“Us? We’re away on business.”

“South Africa.”

“We’ll be gone for two weeks.”

“Yeah, Patricia’s busy too.”

As soon as Oliver hung up, Patricia slid back over and looked at him, wide-eyed. “What did she say?”

“She said your daughter set off firecrackers and blew up the fish pond.”

Patricia stared at him. “Where did she even get firecrackers?”

“Colton found them for her.”
