“I told you from the start, we’re just family. There’s none of that messy romance you’re all imagining.”
“Other people might not believe it, but you too, Mr. Lantz?” Brandon gave a small, crooked smile. “Maybe I just can’t imagine it because I’ve never had it myself.”
Jackson shrugged. “It’s out there though.”
His words hung in the air. There are simple friendships between men and women, sure. But sometimes, things are anything but simple. The world is huge. Anything can happen.
“Uncle, do you know that cop from earlier?” Hope asked, peering over from the back seat.
Jackson nodded while backing the car out. “Yeah.”
Hope launched right in. “I thought so! The way he looked at me was so weird. Like he thought I was someone he used to know, or maybe like he saw someone else through me. It was all longing and disbelief, like he wanted to say something but couldn’t.”
Jackson pressed his lips together, then reached out to ruffle Hope’s hair. “Stop making stuff up.”
“And definitely don’t say anything to your dad.”
Hope’s eyes went wide, like she just uncovered the best gossip. “Wait, does he have a thing for my mom?”
Jackson just stared ahead, quiet.
“Come on, Uncle! Seriously, is it true? Spill!”
“It’s not true. Enough with the wild guesses.” Jackson cut her off, then glanced at her. “So, are you going home or heading to your aunt’s?”
“Aunt Chelsea told me to come over after school. Mom already talked to her about it.”
