Blanca sat still, staring after Malinda. In her eyes, Malinda was perfect. She was beautiful and elegant. “How beautiful!” she muttered.

“What are you looking at?” said a voice behind her.

“Look! That girl is so amazing!” Blanca said. Then she turned and saw Matthew standing close to her. “Why are you here?” Blanca asked with surprise.

Matthew put his goblet on the table slowly and sat down beside Blanca on the couch. “Why wouldn’t I be here?” he shot back.

“Don’t get me wrong. I mean, I could take care of myself and don’t worry about me. Just, uh, go ahead and do your things,” said Blanca earnestly. She thought maybe Matthew worried about her, for she had never come to a party like this before.

Matthew said nothing and raised his eyebrows. This was one of his habitual moves, and even Matthew himself hardly noticed how fascinating the small gesture was. The couch was not very wide. Blanca and Matthew were so close to each other. Looking at Matthew’s handsome side face, Blanca felt her heart begin to pound faster.

“Take you to see Mr. Butler now?” Matthew said suddenly.

“Really?” said Blanca, thoroughly taken aback. Her eyes were suddenly bright. She rubbed her pendant unconsciously, which she had worn since as long as she could remember. The pendant was very precious, for it was the only proof of her identity. Blanca looked at Matthew expectantly, her black eyes gleaming.
