Sophie's condition had been steadily improving, and during her hospital stay, her illness was well under control. However, she suddenly experienced severe vomiting and diarrhea last night.
At that time, Sophie had no one by her side. A fellow patient from the adjacent bed couldn't bear to see her suffering. She asked her daughter to find a nurse, who then rushed Sophie to the emergency room.
Sophie was diagnosed with food poisoning. Fortunately, the treatment was prompt, and no lasting damage was done. With a few more days of rest, she should recover fully.
The daughter of the fellow patient was still shaken by the experience. She relayed the details to Nadine, saying, "Miss, you can't imagine how terrifying it was. Sophie's face turned green, and we thought she might not survive."
Nadine repeatedly thanked her. She dismissed her thanks with a wave of the hand, saying, "We're all in the same ward. Everyone encounters difficulties now and then. Go check on Sophie. I'm going to sleep," she added.
It was late, and everyone was tired.
Nadine didn't continue the conversation. She drew the curtain and began inspecting Sophie's food and drink. She checked everything thoroughly.
Currently, Sophie's only relatives were Victoria and Nadine. Victoria rarely visited the hospital, so Nadine took most of the responsibility for Sophie's care. When Nadine was busy, she relied on colleagues to help look after Sophie.
Nadine had to leave the hospital last night for Sean's sixth birthday and asked a colleague to cover her shift. However, they could not monitor patients continuously as they were often busy. Consequently, detecting and preventing any malicious intent was challenging.
Nadine found no issues with the food and drink Sophie had consumed. However, she was puzzled by one detail. Sophie did not have a habit of eating late-night snacks, so Nadine could not understand how she had ended up with food poisoning.
