"Nad, if one day I'm no longer here, live well and take care of Grandma for me, okay? You're the kindest and most beautiful girl in the world, and you deserve happiness."
Slowly, Jack's face began to merge with Brad's. On the nearly identical face, the smile faded, replaced by a look of cold fury.
With a menacing glare, he spat, "Nadine, is this your lover? I'll kill you!" His elegant hand reached toward her slender neck.
Nadine jolted awake, clutching her throat. Her chest heaved, and she gasped for breath.
…
Winter mornings always came slowly.
That day was a typical workday. With no sun, the sky remained overcast, and the northern wind howled fiercely. Even indoors, the wind's roar was audible, as if it aimed to topple everything in its path.
Daniel had spent the entire night by Adam's side. His face was deeply strained from exhaustion. At nearly 60 years old, his stamina and energy were not what they used to be. Just one night of watching over Adam left him with a sore back and aching knees.
Fortunately, Adam had woken up. Struggling to sit up, he looked at the weary Daniel with concern. "You're not young anymore. Why are you still here? Go home and rest."
Daniel was still worried about Adam's health, so he refused to leave. "Dad, I couldn't rest knowing you were alone. I need to stay here."
