Nathalie furrowed her brows. "What have you done to feel so guilty?"
Miranda suddenly grabbed the hem of Nathalie's dress, her voice desperate and pleading. "Nathalie, please, talk to him for me. I messed up. I shouldn’t have treated you that way. Ask him to forgive me, please."
Nathalie looked down at Miranda with a blank expression, her hand clenched tightly into a fist inside her sleeve.
"So, you're scared my dad will find out how you treated me? Ha! You thought he was out of the picture, that's why you dared to act like that, right? If he were around, you wouldn’t have the guts to bully me, even if you had nine more lives. Isn’t that so?"
Miranda knelt on the floor, tears streaming. "Nathalie, I was wrong."
Nathalie laughed through her tears.
"So my dad does care about me. At least, he'd never let you push his daughter around. Right?"
Miranda's face was pressed against the floor, her whole body shaking. "Yes."
"Nathalie—"
Nathalie was about to press further when a familiar voice interrupted from behind her.
She turned to see Nathan, as calm and welcoming as ever, standing under the oak tree. He stood tall, smiling warmly at her, beckoning her over.
Nathalie dashed to him, throwing her arms around his neck and jumping into his embrace.
"Nathan, you're finally back. I missed you like crazy."
Nathan gently stroked her hair, his voice filled with warmth. "I missed you too. So much."
Nathalie climbed down and walked around him. "Are you all healed up?"
Nathan took a few steps, his stride smooth and steady, no trace of his previous limp.
