Meanwhile, Madelyn hid near the door, feeling distressed but not daring to intervene.
With her strength alone, she simply couldn’t hold her own against those thugs.
Thinking quickly, Madelyn scanned the surroundings, but to her surprise, there was no one nearby
Even the neighbors just peeked out their windows briefly before shutting them tight, indifferent to the
situation.
Clearly, no one wanted to get involved in this matter.
Madelyn felt angry at the apathy of the people here. How could they be so cold–hearted?
Just then, an elderly woman passing by with a basket of vegetables shook her head helplessly.
“Miss, you’d better not get involved in this.”
“Why?” Madelyn asked, puzzled.
The old woman sighed. “We’re used to this sort of thing around here. Whoever intervenes usually ends up in trouble. You should go back.”
After speaking, the elderly lady shook her head and walked away helplessly
Understanding dawned on Madelyn. It seemed that people in this neighborhood were accustomed to such incidents, and perhaps many had been bullied themselves.
So, they would opt to keep their distance and watch with detached interest, fearful of inviting trouble.

“Stop it! Leave her alone!”
Madelyn stood in the doorway, shouting angrily, causing the thugs to pause.
Seeing Madelyn arrive, Jillian panicked. “Madelyn, why are you here? Please, just go!”
How could Madelyn abandon her friend? She wouldn’t leave.
The thugs eyed Madelyn up and down, noticing her unfamiliarity and decent attire.
“Who are you?” one of them yelled.
Madelyn looked at them calmly and replied, “I’m Jillian’s friend.”

sneered, “We’re not afraid of getting caught. We’re here to collect a debt. Her brother owes us millions from gambling and has disappeared. We’re here for payment.”
Upon hearing this, Madelyn couldn’t help but scoff, “A bunch of grown men resorting to bullying a defenseless woman. How shameful! If you were real men, you’d go after her brother!”
However, the thugs ignored her remarks.
One of them turned and kicked Fiona hard. “I don’t care. Either pay up today or we take Jillian to settle the debt. Otherwise, I’ll beat you all!”
Then he turned to Madelyn. “And you, stop interfering. Or else you’ll get it too!”
“Hey!” Madelyn was furious. “Are you disregarding the law?”
“Shut up! Want me to beat you to death?” the thug threatened, swinging his club menacingly.
“Stop!” Jillian saw this and panicked. “I’ll go with you, I’ll go!”
The thugs stopped and asked, “What did you say?”
Jillian took a deep breath, despair evident in her voice, “I said I’ll go with you, but don’t hurt my mom and my friend.”
The thugs seemed satisfied upon hearing this and grunted. “Smart move.”
“Since your daughter is willing to come with us, consider this matter settled. just make sure we never see that kid again!”
After saying this to Fiona, the thugs grabbed Jillian by her hair again and prepared to leave.
“No! Jillian, don’t be foolish!” Madelyn rushed forward and blocked Jillian.
Jillian burst into tears. “Madelyn, I don’t want to leave with them, but I have no choice…”
