Although it was only a small meeting, there were many things to be dealt with. The meeting lasted well past the end of working hours, after which everyone packed up their things and headed back. Only Mikayla and Maxius were left in the conference room. 

*Is Carlos picking you up today? If not, let’s have dinner together!” Maxius smiled warmly. 

“Yes, he’s picking me up. I’ll treat you next time!” Mikayla returned Maxius‘ smile as they left the conference room together. 

The moment she returned to her office, Mikayla received a call from Carlos, asking her if she was done. Since her leg injury, Mikayla got off work on time daily and took any unfinished work home. The meeting today ran late but she forgot to inform Carlos. She took some documents with her before leaving the office with her phone. She answered cheerfully, “I’m done. Coming down now!” 

Maxius looked silently at Mikayla’s closed office door briefly before cleaning up his desk, picking up his briefcase, and leaving too. 

Mikayla went downstairs and saw the black Ford waiting for her. Carlos first took her to dinner before they headed to the auction. 

The Eastray Corporation was holding the auction in Murray Hotel. The auction was more lively than before and it attracted many people from the upper class. Naturally, that kind of charity auction was also participated by many media outlets. 

There were rumors that the auction’s highlight was a vintage limited edition piece designed by Frederic Banton, an internationally renowned jewelry designer. There was only one piece of the necklace in the world and it was specially designed by Frederic for his deceased wife. Frederic seldom designed anything now at his advanced age. Plus, he was auctioning off a necklace he had designed for his late wife this time which one can only come across serendipitously 

After showing their invitation to the security guards, who gave way to them, Mikayla was led into the venue by Carlos. The moment they entered, cameras flashed crazily. 

Mikayla’s outfit today was somewhat out of place at that auction as the event was the type to be frequented by celebrities and the upper class. She had taken Carlos‘ words seriously and had worn her business suit to the auction.

Noticing Mikayla’s discomfort at being stared at, Carlos teased, “The Mika I know wouldn’t care about it!” He meant that Mikayla wasn’t the type be bothered by others‘ opinions. 

Mikayla sat beside Carlos and rolled her eyes at him. She didn’t care what others thought, but she was not that thick–skinned.

Soon after Carlos and Mikayla’s arrival, Winona and Jaxon also made their appearance. Winona held Jaxon’s arm intimately, facing the cameras with a bright smile, while Jaxon showed off his handsome and elegant profile. Jaxon rarely appeared in the media since his wedding with Winona. And even when he was mentioned, it was in association with Mikayla’s name, as Mikayla’s ex–fiancé. The wedding he had planned didn’t make a big splash in Xosa either. It was all eclipsed by Carlos‘ proposal. Jaxon planned to use the charity auction as an opportunity to return to the limelight. ‘I can’t let Carlos step on me anymore,‘ thought Jaxon. 

Winona looked gorgeous today. Her four–month–pregnant belly was perfectly covered up by the gown she chose. Right now, she was following Jaxon around like a happily married woman. Although the doctor had advised her to stay in bed recently, Winona was unwilling to miss attending such an auction with Jaxon. Plus, Jaxon told her that he would buy the necklace designed by Frederic for her during the auction. It was the first time Jaxon had mentioned gifting her something since they married. The necklace was a unique piece and one of its kind in the world. So Winona wore a low V–neck gown with nothing adorning her neck, waiting for Jaxon to win the bid on the necklace and put it on for her. Her smile in front of the camera grew more radiant with that thought. 

When Jaxon entered the venue with Winona, he saw Mikayla and Carlos sitting close to him. ‘I didn’t know they were going to be here too!‘ thought Jaxon in shock. 

Mikayla, who was sitting in the front row, could feel that someone was staring at her. She turned around and found out that it was Jaxon who was staring at her with a malicious gaze. Mikayla didn’t give him more than a brief glance before refocusing on the auction on the stage which was about to start. 

The auctioneer stood on the stage and introduced each item, all of which were expensive. However, there were not many bidders for those items. Most of the people who were in attendance today were there for the final auction item. 

Carlos hadn’t bid on anything yet. He stared fixedly at the stage until a gold goblet was displayed on the stage, stirring an almost negligible ripple in Carlos‘ gaze. According to the host, the gold goblet was a wine vessel used in the Middle Ages. It was the only antique gold ware of the Middle Ages that had been seen so far and also the most exquisite piece. Made of extremely rare pure gold, it had a horn–shaped beast head with two horns as the handle and a gold cap at its mouth. Its eyes, ears, and nose were all delicately carved. “The starting price is 1.7 million dollars, and each bid should not be less than 300 thousand dollars!” As soon as the auctioneer’s voice fell, many antique lovers scrambled to bid. 

Pretty soon, the price had skyrocketed to 17 million dollars, and the person who bid that amount was feeling smug that there was no one else bidding against him anymore.
