Chapter 25
After snapping back at Lily, Mikayla and Juliet took seats far away from the group. Tm surprised to see you actually sticking with a woman, Jerome.” Juliet teased. Seeing Lily’s face darken, Juliet smirked. “Don’t tell me you’ve got some hidden issue, Jerome?”
Jerome laughed off Juliet’s comment. “You’re still as witty as ever Juliet. Even so, he retracted the hand holding Lily.
“Juliet, you’re not much better. You still can’t win over Brantley after all these years!” Lily shot back, irritated.
“So what? It’s better than a who gets plastic surgery to keep her guys. Did you do something to your chin? And those breasts! I don’t remember you being so, uh, well–endowed, Juliet mocked, a mischievous thought crossing her mind. ‘I wonder if those implants would burst if I squeezed her chest hard enough
“You!” Lily snapped, her face turning pale. Seeing Juliet’s eyes on her chest, she quickly crossed her arms over it, thinking. Juliet might actually do something crazy. I spent a fortune on these!”
“Alright, enough of this! We’re here to hang out, not to snipe at each other, Priscilla interjected. She grabbed two glasses and walked over to Mikayla and Juliet, handing one to Mikayla, who ignored it. “Oh, come on! You won’t even drink with me?” Priscilla questioned.
Knowing Mikayla was on her period, Juliet took both glasses and downed them herself, while Priscilla just sipped hers and then turned away, her warm smile turning icy.
Julie, you’re still so agreeable!” Walter chimed in, sitting beside Juliet and trying to fill her glass again.
Suddenly, Mikayla’s phone rang. She checked the caller ID and hesitated before whispering to Juliet, “I need to take this call. Don’t drink too much!”
Juliet nodded, promising to be careful.
Mikayla left the private room and made sure the hallway was empty before answering her phone and heading toward the
restroom
“Mikayla!” greeted a breezy voice Mikayla had been formerly infatuated with.
“What do you want?” Mikayla asked bluntly. She wasn’t in the mood to chat with Jaxon.
“Сал
you ask Carlos to take down those ads?” Jaxon asked. He remembered how sweet and happy Mikayla used to sound when they talked. Now, she sounded distant, like they were strangers.
“No!” denied Mikayla.
“Why?” questioned Jaxon.
“Because I like them, replied Mikayla. She had only ever felt trickles of love from Jaxon, whereas Carlos showered her with high–profile affection. She preferred the latter.
“But… It’s disrupting my life!” Jaxon complained. Reporters swarmed him wherever he went, asking about Carlos’s proposal and if he regretted canceling the engagement. It overshadowed his wedding, Jaxon had hoped to use this marriage to boost the Lindstrom family’s stock prices, but it backfired. Thankfully Hugo managed to stabilize the situation.
“Is that my problem?” Mikayla sneered and ended the call.
Jaxon stared at the dark screen, shocked by Mikayla’s coldness. This isn’t a coincidence, he thought. The Ludwig family is using this to hurt the Lindstrom family. That’s why Carlos made such a flashy proposal now. If I can’t have Mikayla, neither can Carlos! I was so close to getting Mikayla to sleep with me. And if that happened, she wouldn’t marry someone else Suddenly, an idea flashed through Jaxon’s mind.
