Chapter 188 A Visit to the Forgotten
Having changed into a different outfit for the occasion, Avery followed Frank out of the back door.
What amazed her was Frank's skill in disguise; he simply applied something to her face, easily altering her features.
A layer of dark powder made Avery appear a decade older in an instant.
Frank's face, much like hers, was transformed into that of a middle-aged man, concealing his true appearance.
The two of them visited Luminary Asylum again. Avery, pretending to be a distant relative of Jane, found the director, while Frank did not show himself.
Avery was dumbfounded. Even without electricity, there were barbs on the fence-how did Frank manage that?
They split up. Avery explained her reason for being there, and the director's face showed a trace of pity.
"Ah, this child is so pitiful. She's been here for so long, and her parents have never once visited, and her body remains unclaimed to this day."
Avery had thought the body was already cremated, but to her surprise, it was still at the funeral home.
The image of Jane's youthful face flashed in her mind. Some people live pitiful lives, only to end up even more tragic in death.
"Don't worry, director. We will take her back and bury her properly. Her parents are abroad, and it's quite troublesome for them to come back to the country. I'm here to handle her affairs. Are there any of her belongings left here?"
"Alright, I've kept all her belongings. Come with me."
As Avery passed the hospital room she had visited last time, she stopped. "May I go in and take a look?"
"Go ahead. After her death, the other patients were moved out, and the room has been vacant."
Avery pushed open the door. The room, now even more stark than before, contained nothing but a bed and a dresser, its walls whitewashed to a bleak pallor.
Sunlight filtered through the window, casting a glow that stirred up the dust in the air.
The bleak room was a mirror of Jane's desolate life.
"This niece of mine is truly pitiable. She excelled at school, yet who could have known she'd come to this," Avery sighed.
The director agreed, "Indeed. She was such a beautiful young girl."
