Caught red-handed, Colby put on his best poker face and said, “The door… got blown off by the wind.”

“The wind did it, huh? And I’m supposed to foot the bill?” Sophie repeated, raising an eyebrow.

She waved her phone in front of Colby, showing a text from Odie. “Odie says... some nutjob busted into his place last night and smashed his door. He even sent a surveillance video. Want to have a look?”

The footage was as clear as day, showing Colby braving a storm to enter Odie’s house. Odie had uploaded it in the highest quality, too.

Despite the evidence, Colby had a backup plan. “Actually... I just wanted to check how sturdy his door was.”

“Colby! You think I’m blind or something?” Sophie stood up, putting on a stern face. “Were you worried Odie would spill your secret, so you paid him a little visit?”

“No... no, that’s not it.” For the first time, a flicker of panic crossed Colby’s face.

Sophie continued, “I was just asking, and there you go, breaking doors! You’ll cover the costs yourself. I’m not dealing with it!” She tossed the bill at Colby and marched upstairs.

Colby glanced at the $1,800 bill in his hand, then at Jonah, who was lurking nearby.

Jonah tried to mask his jitters, lowering his head. “Mr. Colby, this was... the boss’s idea.”

“Tell your boss I’ll personally fix the door,” Colby said, stone-faced.

Jonah felt a shiver run down his spine. What were they getting into with Colby?

Fix it himself? How on earth? Jonah couldn’t picture Colby fixing anything.
