Watching the empty palm of his hand, James suddenly felt uneasy.
After a while, Sophie spoke up, "How did you get here?"
"You'd be treated poorly coming alone, so why did you still come by yourself?"
Sophie paused before responding, "I asked you first."
James pursed his lips, "Today is Nichole's birthday. I still need to make it there."
"Nichole's birthday?" Sophie looked stunned, "Then why are you here?"
James always cared more about Nichole than others.
James frowned slightly at Sophie's tone, "The Russell family's dinner party is crucial for maintaining the relationship between the Burke and Russell families, I had to come."
"You don't mean that." Sophie said softly.
James didn't catch it clearly, "What did you say?"
Sophie remained silent, remembering in her past life, James also knew about the Russell family's dinner party, yet he still didn't accompany her, leaving her to deal with the difficult Jessica and other distant relatives of the Russell family by herself, and later, he didn't even bother to give her an excuse for not coming.
"I said, isn't it more appropriate for you to spend Nichole's important birthday with her?"
"I don’t need reminding."
Mentioning Nichole softened James’ tone, "Nichole has been parentless since childhood, very obedient and sensible. As soon as she heard about the Russell family's dinner, she called me to handle things first, and I promised her I’d join her for her birthday after the dinner."

Enjoying the story, to much victimising Sophie, they could at least try to target others. Hope at some point Sophie comes clean and forgives James and explain her view of loving the boy James was. Just so they both learn and move on. Really needs to be some consequences for the instigators instead of being let go. Sandy needs to see Vanessa is using her as a cover, and Sandy needs to wake up to herself, or be held responsible by her father for alienating the people she was supposed to make contact with. Hope the reporter brother is keeping an eye on what Vanessa and Odie are up to, and that he has he’s own justice in store. Hope he becomes like Reese a good partner. Hope James lives and finds he’s HEA. Need to put Nicole in prison , no release and several lifetimes , with all the evidence on the crimes she’s committed just to get her out of the way guilt free. More about what’s up with Gordon....
