Sophie held her true feelings back while James ignored her, suddenly speeding up the car. "Remember to transfer me the money you spent today once we get home."
Hearing this, Sophie couldn't hide her displeasure. "You asked me out and now you want me to pay for myself?"
"It was just an act."
"What's wrong with a man spending a bit on his own wife?"
"You said it yourself, we're a contract couple."
Sophie was at a loss for words. She had hoped to get a little advantage over James, but it seemed she was too optimistic.
James was a businessman. How could he possibly allow himself to be at a loss?
"Stingy."
Sophie took a deep breath. Forget it, no use getting angry. After all, she didn't want to owe him anything. She would pay him. It's not like she couldn’t afford it.
Back at the Burke residence, Sophie’s phone buzzed continuously with notifications, each one showing photos of her and James shopping together.
"Burke International’s couple sweetly hand in hand on a shopping spree."
"Business mogul dotes on his delicate wife, romance novel turns into reality."
And many more headlines like these.
One of the headlines even read, "CEO Spends a Fortune for His Beloved Wife," making Sophie's teeth itch with irritation.
"Spending a fortune for his delicate wife? And yet he wants me to pay?"
Casually glancing at James, who had gone to the kitchen to wash his hands, she said, "I’ve been a bit tight on money recently, so, um..."
"No worries, you can pay in installments."

Enjoying the story, to much victimising Sophie, they could at least try to target others. Hope at some point Sophie comes clean and forgives James and explain her view of loving the boy James was. Just so they both learn and move on. Really needs to be some consequences for the instigators instead of being let go. Sandy needs to see Vanessa is using her as a cover, and Sandy needs to wake up to herself, or be held responsible by her father for alienating the people she was supposed to make contact with. Hope the reporter brother is keeping an eye on what Vanessa and Odie are up to, and that he has he’s own justice in store. Hope he becomes like Reese a good partner. Hope James lives and finds he’s HEA. Need to put Nicole in prison , no release and several lifetimes , with all the evidence on the crimes she’s committed just to get her out of the way guilt free.
