William hurriedly nodded and said with a sickly sweet smile, "Sure thing, Mr. Gardner. Please watch your step. You can come to me directly if there's anything you don't understand. I'll tell you everything."
Nicole stood frozen on the spot, and her whole body felt brittle and tense. Yet, even then, she refused to believe that her mother was involved in a hit-and-run accident.
When she felt her arm being tugged gently, she immediately snapped out of her trance. She raised her head, saw Colton's worried expression, and forced a smile. "Alright, let's go," she murmured faintly.
He nodded, took her hand in his, and left without hesitation.
On the other hand, Lydia had been listening all the while. She had long since finished preparing coffee but didn't return to the living room when she saw the showdown occurring earlier.
She placed the coffee on the table, turned to William, and pressed for answers. "Just what is going on?"
His expression darkened at her forceful attempt. He had just dismissed Colton and Nicole by the skin of his teeth, and now Lydia was here demanding an explanation, so he hissed in irritation, "It's none of your business! You just have to keep your nose where it belongs!"
They had been husband and wife for years, so she knew that he was hiding something when she saw his panicked expression.
Although William tried his best to compose himself, she could tell that he was lying! Nevertheless, she didn't plan to expose him. After all, if William were involved in Old Mrs. Gardner's death, the whole Andersons—including herself and Queenie—would be doomed.
...
Nicole's face was stricken when she left the Andersons' residence, and she clenched her fists tightly.
Colton's gaze darkened at her condition. He knew she must be devastated by this incident. So, he immediately tried to offer her comfort, as he gently cupped her face and reassured her, "Nicky, what William said may not be true. Your mom is dead now. I don't know who got the surveillance at that intersection, but there's one thing I'm certain of. That person has a backup of the surveillance after he deleted the surveillance at the place where the accident occurred."
She slowly raised her eyes and looked at Colton with a bit of confusion in her gaze. She sounded a little strained as she muttered, "Are you saying you found the person who sent the photo?"
"Yes." He nodded. "If you believe your mom didn't do it, I believe you."
He would investigate this matter thoroughly, whether it was for Nicole or Benedict.
"Okay. If my mom really did this, I would take the responsibility on her behalf!"
She closed her eyes for a while as she focused on calming herself. Then, when she opened them again, her eyes were filled with determination! She didn't believe that her mother would do something horrible like this!
Colton smiled to see the confidence and resoluteness on her face. This was the Nicole he knew.
"Don't worry. Even if your mother was the culprit, I could persuade Grandpa and Dad to give us their blessings," he lowered his head and murmured softly.
The solemn scene was disrupted by Colton, and the atmosphere instantly became amorous.
Nicole felt goosebumps all over her body at his tone. She even slid to the side, a safe distance away from Colton, and rubbed her arms. "Stop it, will you?! I have goosebumps because of you!"
He chuckled at her reaction and didn't say anything more.
William told them that it was Madeline who drove the car, hit Ella, and fled, but all they received was the screenshot of the surveillance. The person who sent the photo must have a hidden agenda since he sent a picture instead of the complete surveillance video.
The first thing that popped into Nicole's mind when she wanted to get the surveillance footage was her son. Hayden's hacking skills were excellent, and maybe he could restore the video.
It was Hayden who restored the surveillance video in the hotel on the night Nicole and Colton spent a night together.
At the thought of this, she requested Colton to bring Hayden over. After all, the Gardners might not want to see her now, which was understandable.
