Maren couldn’t shake the unease growing in her chest once it sank in that Sawyer had never really known how to navigate love, just like her.

The elders of the Marshall family, all with families of their own, kept a watchful eye on them. Their depth of relationship knowledge vastly exceeded that of Maren and Sawyer, leaving little room for error without

consequences.

Suddenly, Higgs and Yvette made their appearance, exiting the men’s restroom after a heated half–hour together. They clung to each other as they stepped out, with Higgs‘ arm wrapped possessively around Yvette, his hand boldly ascending her thigh.

“Those two are the experts here,” Maren said with a laugh, sharing a knowing look with Sawyer. Next to Higgs and Yvette, they felt like complete novices.

“How about we try copying what they’re doing?” Sawyer suggested.

“Have you lost your senses?” Maren’s first instinct was to show him the door.

Imagine them sneaking off to find seclusion in the restroom, then him daring to touch her so publicly? The thought alone was enough for Maren to consider violence.

“It’s not what you think. I was merely suggesting we mimic their closeness, nothing inappropriate. I promise to keep it respectful,” Sawyer hastily explained, noticing Maren’s misinterpretation.

His true desire was to make a lasting impression, hoping she might consider him first for future endeavors of this sort, allowing him at last to reveal his long–suppressed affections.

“That’s acceptable,” Maren agreed.

“May I put my arm around you?” Sawyer asked cautiously.

While the antics of Higgs and Yvette were admittedly excessive, merely sitting and talking wasn’t enough to

blend in.

“Alright.” Maren gave a nod. “Do whatever you want, just don’t take it too far.” She never had much talent for stuff like this, so she decided it was better to let Sawyer handle it.

Despite their past as competitors, she trusted his integrity. He might lack her forthrightness, but he wasn’t one to exploit her trust.

At that moment, Higgs and Yvette glanced their way.

With Maren’s approval, Sawyer began his act. He gently encircled her waist from behind and offered her a sip
