Chapter 295 An Experience
She Had Never Had In H…
Had it been indisputably established that Lucien and Maren shared an authentic bond, the charge that Lucien colluded with the criminal world to undermine the Marshall family would naturally crumble instantly. In turn, Higgs would be stripped of his strongest leverage against Lucien.
Deep down, Higgs recognized that Calvert valued Lucien far more than himself.
This was made clear by Lucien’s relationship with Maren, a woman from the underworld. Had any other Marshall family member mingled with the underground world, Calvert would have acted without hesitation to preserve the family’s image.
Should Higgs fail to exploit this moment to unseat Lucien, it would severely limit his chances of becoming the
heir.
“Isn’t this the plan you previously told me about? Are you backing out now?” Calvert snapped, his voice laced
with steel.
Although they hadn’t caught Maren in a direct lie, this at least proved Lucien hadn’t committed betrayal, easing Calvert’s mind somewhat.
Sensing Calvert’s irritation, Leon stepped in. “Please, let’s not jump to conclusions. Let Higgs speak first.”
“Proceed,” Calvert said tersely, knowing Higgs had a cunning mind. However, that sharp mind often drifted towards manipulation–something he found distasteful.
“Thank you, Grandpa. Honestly, a single peck–especially on the cheek–proves nothing. I’ve been in a few relationships myself, and frankly, Lucien and Maren hardly resemble a real couple,” Higgs said with unwavering confidence.
“But they seemed natural tonight.” Calvert raised his eyebrow, unconvinced.
Maren had played her part well at the banquet.
From the outset, she’d slapped Lucien across the face, clearly furious over his interaction with Yvette. Lucien didn’t get angry, which strongly hinted at his deep regard for Maren.
Later, they disappeared into the ladies‘ room together, returning with affectionate body language and tender expressions–nothing appeared amiss.
At that point, Higgs pulled out a handful of printed images and passed them over to Calvert. “Grandpa, don’t base your judgment solely on tonight’s display. It’s important to weigh their usual behavior too.”
Calvert accepted the photographs, scanning through them. They all captured casual moments of Maren and Lucien in their day–to–day lives.

Their demeanor in the shots was nothing like what had been seen Kariet
They kept a polite gap between each other, ging off the impression of mere seguintances, completely void of
romantic chemistry
“What’s going on here?” Calvert’s earlier confidence in Maren and Locten began to crumble the more he
examined the visuals.
Leon silently admired Higgs‘ resourcefulness in acquiring such materials.
In truth, Higgs had dispatched individuals to shadow the pair and discreetly document their actions
“So, you believe Lucien and Maren were putting on a show tonight?” Calvert pieced together Higg insinuation
“More specifically, the performance was meant to sway you, Grandpa,” Higgs replied, carefully pressing
Calvert’s buttons.
It wasn’t a stretch–Calvert held the final say in matters like these, and the entire act seemed crafted to influence him most of all
Irritation flickered across Calvert’s face, building toward a boil.
Before he could lash out, Lucien’s father intervened. “Dad, this is no small accusation. We can’t draw conclusions from a few snapshots. They were simply spending time together. Affection doesn’t have to be visible in public. And Maren’s naturally reserved. If she’s timid even before us, it’s expected she wouldn’t show emotion openly in front of strangers. For all we know, they might’ve had a small quarrel that day. My wife and I have been happily married for decades, but we aren’t always demonstrative in public either. You get what I mean, don’t you?”
Edwin’s words, meant to shield Lucien and Maren, poured out with genuine concern.
And it worked–Calvert’s agitation began to fade. “You have a point. Higgs, maybe we shouldn’t dismiss their relationship just because of a few candid shots. Is there another way we can be sure?”
Unable to dismiss Edwin’s logic, Calvert turned again to Higgs for alternatives.
Neither Higgs nor Leon looked pleased with Edwin’s intervention.
Still, with Calvert expecting a solution, Higgs had no choice but to present a plan.
“There’s one method. If we want to assess whether there’s real affection between Lucien and Miss Maren, we should monitor how they act when no one’s watching Higgs proposed. “Let’s have her stay for the night and share a room with Lucien We’ll install surveillance–a camera and a listening device beforehand. That way, we’ll get a genuine glimpse of their private dynamic.”
“Excellent suggestion” Calvert nodded. “Then I’m entrusting this assignment to you, Higgs. I want the truth. Find out who they really are behind closed doors.”
“Consider it done!” Higgs replied, inwardly elated.
