Chapter 296 Adorable
Maren was concerned about her recent impulsiveness. I hope Sawyer isn’t too upset about my decision,” she
murmured with a hint of worry.
She realized she hadn’t considered how Sawyer might feel.
“Perhaps I should make it up to him with a dinner.” Maren recalled how often Sawyer had hinted at her treating him to a meal–a promise she hadn’t yet kept. It seemed like the perfect solution.
“If you’re thinking of making it up to me, I expect a dinner at a fancy restaurant,” Sawyer suddenly joked. appearing behind her unexpectedly.
Caught off guard by his sudden presence, Maren jumped. “Sawyer, when did you get here?”
A blush crept up her cheeks as she remembered the closeness they had shared earlier.
“You’re so adorable,” Sawyer said, his gaze softening as he admired her flustered state.
This was a side of Maren he hadn’t seen before–the fearsome heiress of the underworld showing a moment of
bashfulness.
It was the first time Maren had let her guard down this much.
“Stop it!” Maren retorted sharply to his compliment. No one had called her adorable before, and the term unsettled her. However, to Sawyer, her irritation only added to her allure.
It was clear she wasn’t angry, just embarrassed.
Sawyer grew increasingly fond of Maren with each passing moment.
He kept his thoughts to himself, however, as he knew Maren would not take kindly to hearing them spoken
aloud.
While they were talking, a knock came at the door.
“Lucien, Miss Morgan, Grandpa sent me to discuss something with you,” said Higgs through the door.
“What’s Higgs doing here?” Maren’s dislike for Higgs was no secret; she blamed him for the uncomfortable situation earlier that evening.
“He must be plotting something new,” Sawyer replied while opening the door.
“You two seem quite comfortable. I was half expecting to find you in a tender moment,” Higgs sneered, hinting that he wasn’t fooled by their previous display of closeness.
“The banquet is still going. What’s your reason for interrupting?” Sawyer asked.
“It’s Grandpa’s request, not mine. He wishes to speak with you both,” Higgs replied, cleverly dropping Calvert’s name to ensure they felt obligated to comply.

“Why does Calvert want to see us now?” Maren inquired, stepping closer with a mix of curiosity and caution
As soon as Higgs entered the room and saw Maren, he was struck by her beauty, a sight that briefly distracted
him.
Sawyer, perceiving Higgs‘ intent, quickly positioned himself between Higgs and Maren, effectively shielding her
from Higgs‘ gaze.
This act irritated Higgs greatly, and he silently vowed to remove his cousin from the situation so he could have Maren to himself.
Higgs masked his frustration and said, “Grandpa has taken a great liking to Miss Morgan and would like her to spend a few days with the Marshall family. Lucien, she’ll be staying in your room.”
Wouldn’t it be so much better if Maren could stay in his room instead?
He watched Maren and Sawyer closely, looking for any sign of discomfort or surprise that might betray their feelings. However, he found none.
Both Maren and Sawyer were skilled enough to maintain composed facades, showing nothing that Higgs hoped
to see.
“Well, that’s all from me. I’ll be on my way,” Higgs said, leaving in disappointment.
After Higgs left, Maren and Sawyer quickly shut the door behind him and turned to each other.
“We might not have completely convinced them yet.”
“It seems we still have work to do to truly convince everyone.” Maren nodded thoughtfully.
“We’ve made a progress, but we’re not there yet. We need to be more convincing.” Sawyer leaned back, his tone thoughtful.
More convincing?
“And how do you suggest we do that?” Maren rolled her eyes.
Considering the public kiss they had shared, she wondered how they could be more convincing
Sawyer shifted uncomfortably, clearly at a loss for words. The surreal nature of their staged affection still hadn’t fully settled in for him.
“Why did you kiss me earlier?” he blurted out.
Maren paused, the directness catching her off guard. “Don’t read too much into it. I just don’t want to lose the opportunity with the Marshall family. Let’s leave now. Lingering might make people suspicious.”
Maren quickly exited without further discussion.
