The Norris residence, a cluster of ancient but magnificent-looking buildings, sat on top of a mountain in the West.
Reading an old chess manual in the study was an elderly man in a black outfit.
He was the Patriarch of the Norris family, Raphael Norris.
Besides his fascination with the board game, the man was also interested in combat arts and alcoholic drinks.
A female servant was playing the harp while Raphael perused his reading material.
He was already sucked into the book when Ash’s rapid footsteps suddenly distracted him.
After hurrying into the study, the family butler bowed respectfully to Raphael. “Sir—”
With his eyes still glued to his book, Raphael lifted his hand and gestured for Ash to stop talking. “I don't care how urgent it is. It'll have to wait until I'm done reading.”
Ash had no choice but to stand aside and wait until he was ready to listen to him.
Half an hour later, Raphael finally set his reading material aside before exclaiming, “What an amazing read! The way the author sets his opponent up to react exactly the way he wanted is just mind-blowing!”
The man then let out a long sigh of satisfaction before turning to the butler. “So, what was it that you wanted to tell me?”
With his head lowered, Ash answered softly, “Mr. Hubert has returned to Brimmopolis, sir.”
Raphael was slightly shocked when he heard the butler. “So soon? He's supposed to represent our family in congratulating the general. Did he somehow offend the man or something?”
“No, sir. General Quillen is glad that we've decided to support him. But...”
“But what?” questioned Raphael with a frown.
“Mr. Hubert was involved in a scuffle and got his left leg broken.”
