Laura reached Nathan's home a while later and brought a few of her best subordinates with her, leaving the rest to wait in the courtyard.
Nathan sat on the couch sipping coffee next to Penny and Queenie while Colin and Ava stood guard by the side with their hands clasped.
Laura was expecting Nathan to stand up and greet her, but he calmly remained seated on the couch, like a king receiving an audience with another country's emissary.
She had no choice but to tamp down her annoyance and stepped forward with her subordinates. “Hello, Mr. Cross, Mrs. Cross, and Ms. Smith,” she said formally to Nathan and his family.
Penny nodded with a smile, and Queenie replied in a clear voice, “Hello.”
Laura noticed that despite Queenie's young age, she was well-mannered, and her face was starting to lose her childlike features, becoming more mature.
She couldn't help but feel satisfied with the Curia's decision to choose her as the future Holy Maiden.
While she was studying Queenie, Nathan was doing the same to Laura.
He didn't miss the way Laura looked at Queenie and sensed something was amiss. His brows furrowed in response.
He asked placidly, “And you are Laura, one of the cardinals of the Curia?”
Laura gave a slight bow. “Yes, Mr. Cross.”
Nathan continued in a neutral tone, “Why did the Curia send you here again when the Holy Maiden had just left? Is there something else?”
“Mr. Cross, I came here today to talk about strengthening our alliance,” she answered with a grin.
