Laura said smilingly, “We've just chosen our future Holy Maiden among countless girls from all around the world, and she is none other than Mr. Cross' daughter, Ms. Queenie Smith. Congratulations, Ms. Queenie Smith, for you are now our future Holy Maiden. You will be next in line for the title of the Holy Maiden, and you'll be worshipped by innumerable faithful believers of the Curia worldwide. You'll be even more famous than the most popular female celebrity in the world.”
By the second half of her speech, she had already turned to Queenie. Evidently, those words were directed at the latter.
However, Queenie was confounded. She did not know whether it was good news or bad news to hear that from Laura.
Similarly, the expressions on Nathan's and Penny's faces changed.
That revelation gave Penny a terrible shock, and she soon found it inappropriate.
She did not like the idea of her daughter becoming some kind of Holy Maiden of the Curia, let alone the thought of the latter getting worshipped by countless believers.
As strange as she found the situation, she feared it too.
She was terrified of the Curia stealing her daughter away.
Hence, she quickly wrapped her arms around Queenie and solemnly uttered, “I won't agree to that. My daughter can be a teacher, a doctor, a lawyer, or something along those lines. I don't mind my daughter being ordinary, but I will never let anyone steal her away, nor will I allow her to join some kind of denomination to become its Holy Maiden!”
The truth was that Penny instinctively felt that joining the Curia and becoming a Holy Maiden was bad for her daughter as her daughter might end up spending most of her time in Curia, making it difficult for them to meet.
There was no way she was going to let the Curia take her daughter away from her.
However, Nathan thought further than Penny.
He immediately figured out that the Curia was trying to create a connection between him and them by doing so.
However, the Curia's action was not something he agreed with; it was even putting his daughter in danger.
Many dark clans abominated the Curia, and many even had tales of how eating a Holy Maiden's heart or drinking a Holy Maiden's blood could make them stronger.
If the Curia were to declare to the public that his daughter was the future Holy Maiden, he dreaded to think how many people would go after his daughter with the intention of harming her.
Hence, Nathan flew into a rage at once.
Not only was he giving her a stern warning, but he was even asking her to scram. All in all, he had put her in a tight spot.
For a while, a variety of expressions fleeted across her face. In the end, she scurried off with her subordinates for fear of infuriating the angry Nathan further.
When they came out of Nathan's place, her subordinates reacted differently to the outcome.
One asked, “Cardinal Laura, Mr. Cross and his wife disapprove of their daughter becoming the Curia's Holy Maiden. We've failed our mission, so are we heading back now?”
Laura shook her head. “No, the pope has stated that if Mr. Cross disagrees with it, we'll indirectly declare to the public that his daughter is the future Holy Maiden. We'll be forcing a relationship between him and us. Now, have the headquarters and the branches all over the world announce this news at the same time: Queenie is the Curia's future Holy Maiden. Once she turns sixteen, she'll officially take over Hepburn's role to become the Holy Maiden.”
Her subordinates exchanged glances with each other.
One then piped up, “Won't this enrage Mr. Cross?”
Laura confidently answered, “Be at ease. I know what to do to Mr. Cross to make him repress his anger and acquiesce that his daughter is the future Holy Maiden.”
