Chapter 179
Susan returned to the ward and, standing at the door, she hesitated to enter.
She did not lack the courage to confront Scarlett, but she could not bear to accept her death.
Crouching down slowly, she hugged her arms and leaned against the wall, her helplessness making it seem as if the world had abandoned her.
When Lanny brought a group of doctors on rounds, she saw Susan and quickly asked the other doctors to keep going while she went forward to help Susan up.
“Miss Croft, are you alright?”
Susan nodded her head stifly.
Lanny looked at her swollen eyes and took a deep breath.
Miss Croft. “Fate determines life and death, no one can alter it. What you can do now is to spend more time with her, so you don’t have any regrets later on”
Her words woke Susan up, causing her dim pupils to recover a trace of vitality.
“How long can she live?”
After pondering for a long time, Susan finally asked with a hoarse voice.
Lanny did not hide it from her and truthfully said, “About a week…”
Susan’s body swayed and she almost fainted
After Lanny supported her, he advised. “You must stay strong at this time. You must not give in. Otherwise, what would Miss Sales do?”
Susan was a little absent-minded. She nodded and said, “Yes, I have to hold on. I can’t let Scarlett worry about me…”
As she talked to herself, she forced her exhausted body to walk into the ward.
Lanny, looking through the glass window, saw Susan tenderly caressing Scarlett’s check.
The sunlight streamed in, bathing the two poor people in a gentle, golden warmth.
Lanny finally grasped why Scarlett was setting aside money for Susan; they were relying on one another.
Lanny, reflecting on her years of solitude and independence, felt a pang of sadness.
She lowered her eyes and turned to leave, giving the two of them privacy.
Scarlett had yet to wake up and was still sleeping. Susan took the towel from the nurse’s hand and wiped her body.
When Scarlett awoke, Susan’s face had already softened into a gentle smile, indicating that her emotions had stabilized.
Scarlett, is there anything you’d like to eat? I’ll get it for you.
Hearing Susan’s hoarse voice, Scarlett calmed down.
She didn’t have much strength. She reached out to touch Susan’s clothes and gripped them tightly.
“Susan, are Cosmo and his sister alright?”
When Scarlett awoke, the first thing she inquired about was Susan’s life.
The effort Susan had put in to finally calm her emotions almost came undone.
She resisted the urge to cry and comforted Scarlett, “It’s okay. They are just close.”
Probably Scarlett was afraid that Susan would worry, so Scarlett hadn’t told her about being in the late stage.
Just as she did now, she didn’t want Scarlett to worry in her last moment, so she chose to lie.
Scarlett’s blurred eyes could not see the expression on Susan’s face, so she believed it was true. “That’s good.”
After she finished speaking, she grabbed Susan’s hand, noticing that it was freezing, and frowned slightly.
“Susan, why is your hand so cold? Were you cold outside?”
Without waiting for Susan to answer, Scarlett grabbed her hand tightly and put it under her blanket.
