Chapter 191
“I’m sorry.” Cara’s voice stopped Millie in her tracks.
Millie stood at the end of the bed and gazed at her calmly. If she had fell pity for her yesterday, it was now replaced by indifference.
She had been brutally beaten, her forehead wrapped in gauze, and her arms covered in bandages. The extent of Kane’s cruelty toward her was evident.
Millie couldn’t help but feel pathetic when she reflected on how Cara had gone out of her way to protect Kane just the day before. And what did she receive in return? Only more severe violence from him,
“Dr. Caldwell, please understand that I have no other option. I depend on him for food and shelter.” Her emotions were a bit unsteady, and the wound on her face was painful as she spoke.
Millie frowned as Cara continued, “I’ll die without him. Do you understand?”
Millie shook her head. She simply couldn’t comprehend.
“I have to beg him to pay for my medical expenses. I’ll be dead if I lose him. In fact, he treats. me quite well.” Her voice gradually softened.
She was simply too ordinary. She was a 30–year–old woman from the countryside. Her life revolved around getting married, having children, and caring for her family. If her husband no longer wanted her, she would truly have nowhere to go.
Millie gazed at her, and the haze in her heart seemed to gradually dissipate. At that moment, she realized that her marriage with Winston was not as tragic as the relationship Cara was trapped in.
Millie called out her name for the very first time. “Cara Turner, a woman can marry a man, but she should never surrender her entire life to him unless that man proves himself deserving Clearly, your husband is not worthy of your utmost trust and dedication.
“Between your life and having children for him, he chose for you to bear children for him. He pushed you to the floor and beat you at the outpatient clinic without regard for the bystanders.
“And now, he has brutally beaten you to the point where you need to be hospitalized. Can’t you see the situation clearly?”
Cara remained silent after being lectured. She knew that Kane was toxic to her, but she just couldn’t bring herself to accept it,
The person you should be apologizing to is not me, but yourself. Take a moment to examine your body. How much injustice have you truly suffered?”

With that, Millie left.
In the elevator, she glanced at her reflection with a bitter smile. “Millie, take a moment to look at yourself too. Look at this body that has been with you for more than 20 years.
“How much has it endured while following you? Was it not a foolish decision to lose your own essence due to marriage?”
Suddenly, a breaking news notification flashed across the screen of her phone. “Recent Report: Lowell Group to Collaborate with Greer Group.”
Millie’s heart faltered when she read the news. Greer Group’s willingness to cooperate with Lowell Group was a remarkable acknowledgment of Lowell Group.
While this appeared to be a simple collaboration on the surface, behind the scenes, it was actually a preliminary preparation for Winston and Joanna to be together.
Millie switched off her phone, her gaze fixed on the rapidly changing numbers within the elevator. She could feel her thoughts gradually settling down. What right did she have to guide others when her own marriage was a mess?
Yet, Cara’s timely appearance had been a wake–up call for which she was truly thankful. Her next step was clear–divorce Winston.
