I listened expressionlessly to the disconnect tone before hanging up my phone.
Honestly speaking. I was dying to run into President Smith’s office and ask what really happened. On the other hand, I was afraid of pissing Eric off and getting myself in trouble if I took too long. Therefore, I tried to hide the discomfort in myself, gathered my things and hurried to the Walker Group.
When the front desk staff saw me coming, they didn’t stop me. Instead, they greeted me with smiley faces before calling the front desk and taking the elevator for me. The office staff treated me well too, as they took the initiative to greet me before immediately stepping inside to announce my arrival. Soon, they took me to the president’s office

In the office, Eric was on a call and just waved at me as I walked in before going back to the phone conversation. His secretary invited me to sit down and even brought me coffee.
Due to my unpleasant experience with the drink I was served, I thanked him and placed my hands on my knees, silently waiting for Eric to end his call.
Not long after, he ended the call and noticed that I was sitting in a proper position, a sight that made him chuckle. “Why don’t you drink the coffee? Is it that bad? Do I need to ask them to make you another cup?”
I didn’t want to be on the secretary’s bad side. Since I would be working very closely with Eric in the future, I was afraid that if I pissed off the team, they might create problems for me in the future. So, reluctantly, I lifted the glass to sniff, and after confirming there was no off-smell, I relaxed and took a sip. He smiled widely at me. “Is the coffee okay?”
“It’s pretty decent.”
“It’s better than the last one, right?” he asked again.
“Yes”, I replied without thinking, but I soon realized that his question was strange. What does he mean? Is he openly warning me to behave, or else would he play a trick on me again?
I glanced at Eric, who was still smiling at me. “There was an incident in the tender last time and the company hired a new employee. That careless girl mixed the coffee powder with the tea leaves. Only found out about this when someone complained. By the way, did you order tea that day? It must have been awful.”
What employee would mess things up like that? Besides, I was the only one who fell victim to it. Looking at her serious face, I smiled without commenting further. He was probably bored with my lack of response so he reached out to me. “Where is the design plan?”
“Give me a sec.” I grabbed my laptop and opened the file to show him the design.
He took one look at my draft and made an uninhibited remark. “Huh, that sounds pretty average,
“Yes.” I forced a smile, knowing that whatever comment he threw at me, I could never be mad at him. “How do you want it changed?”
“Here, here and here.” Eric’s finger indicated some dots on the screen. His slovenly attitude bothered me, but I patiently prodded him: “What specific aspects do you want to change?”
“Aren’t you
the designer?” He looked at me with an amused face. “I’m just expressing my opinion. As for edits, that’s up to you.
His words effectively shut my mouth. Suppressing the anger in me, I asked: “When are we going to the site for inspection?”
“Unhurried. We will go after lunch.” He didn’t seem hurried at all as he glanced casually at his wristwatch. “There is still some time to go. Why don’t you work on editing the draft right here? I’ll check it out after that.”
“Right here?” I looked at him in bewilderment.

“Yes.” Eric pointed to his seat. “You can sit there and work on it. Once you’re done, show it to me.”
I immediately felt enormous pressure on my shoulders. If Eric wanted to monitor me, I would feel extremely uncomfortable. Fortunately, he didn’t want to be intrusive. After motioning for me to sit down, he promptly left the office.

In his absence, I felt more relaxed. I looked at the draft for a while and made some changes to the layout and color of the areas he pointed out just now.
I wondered if it was just a psychological effect, but after I made the changes, the draft was better than the previous version. Just as I was thinking about it, I suddenly felt a rush of heat around my ear.
