Chapter 942 Never Going To Work
Alex stood by the window broodily as the last of his wedding guests left, while Kate sat cradling Emmalyn on a chair and entertaining the child with a doll as if nothing had happened.
“Alex, do you want to hold Emma? She seems to really like you. She even cried when you passed her to someone else. Maybe she felt a connection with you even though it’s your first time meeting her,” Kate said, continuing to entertain Emmalyn.
Alex felt troubled by her words. His disrupted wedding, the withdrawal of investment from the tech dome, and the sudden revelation of having a daughter left him in a state of confusion.
He scratched his head, feeling frustrated. He wanted to confront Kate and ask why she hadn’t chosen to abort their child when she had been so reluctant to give birth in the past. Why did she go to a foreign country secretly to have the baby?
“Kate, don’t you think you owe me an explanation? What in the world is going on?” Alex asked, restraining his temper.
Kate placed Emmalyn down in the pram and walked over to Alex. She held his hand and replied, “I initially considered having an abortion but had a change of heart. This is a human. life, after all. I believe that destiny has brought her into my life for a reason, so it’s my responsibility to give birth to her and show her the wonders of the world.” Kate leaned on Alex’s shoulder and feigned helplessness. “Do you know how challenging it is for a single mother to raise a child alone in a foreign country? How much unfair treatment and disdainful looks I have to endure? I’m not saying all this to seek your pity. It was all worth it. as I watched Emmalyn grow.”
However, Kate’s true motive for keeping the child wasn’t as she had portrayed. She had discovered Alex’s true identity a while back and intended to use the child as leverage.
While it was true that Kate had raised Emmalyn alone in a foreign country, she had received. a substantial amount of money from Woody to ensure her financial stability. She had never willingly held Emmalyn herself since giving birth. Instead, the child had been primarily. cared for by a nanny.
Kate’s display of closeness with Emmalyn was merely an act she put on for Alex’s benefit. She wanted to evoke guilt in him and compel him to make amends with the Suttons, with the hope of elevating their status in Lumenopolis.
And it had worked. Alex felt remorseful and realized he shouldn’t have blamed it all on Kate.
He recognized his obligation as a father and as a man to take responsibility.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said those things. Now that you’re back, what are your plans?” Alex asked, aware that Kate likely had an agenda, possibly intending to disrupt his and Maggie’s wedding.
However, instead of giving Alex a straight answer, Kate hugged his waist and said in a heartfelt tone. “I heard that you and Heather are now divorced. Can you give me and our daughter a home now?”
Alex immediately pushed Kate away at that and kept his distance.
