Nell frowned, subconsciously resisting his forceful conversation style and his attitude.
“But you’re usually very busy too! Besides, I’ve only been busy recently. It’s not something that happens all the time.”
“That won’t do either.”
In some ways, this man was simply overbearing.
Gideon said in a deep voice, “I’m a man. Taking on the burden of a family is my responsibility. That’s what I should do, but you’re different. You just need to be a good Mrs. Leith. If you’re interested, you can develop your own hobby or career, but you should never get the wrong idea.”
Nell was unconvinced at his words.
“You’re saying that your work is important but my job is optional! Gideon Leith, you’re being too chauvinistic!
“I told you a long time ago. I’m not a canary that you raise in a cage. I don’t need you to coddle me with your standards.
“Yes, maybe my work isn’t worth mentioning in your eyes, but it’s very important to me. I don’t want to just be someone else’s accessory. I’ll never give up my career!”
The woman became more agitated as she spoke, and her tone had grown exasperated by the end.
Then, she puffed her cheeks out and sullenly turned her head to the side.
Gideon’s eyes deepened.
“When did I say to give up your career?”
“Didn’t you just say it? The most important thing is to be a good Mrs. Leith, and I can only develop my own career if I have free time!”
She spat out the words ‘if I have free time’ as if reminding him how unreasonable his words were and how much they hurt her self-esteem.
Gideon looked at the woman in the arms who was like an angry little cat and suddenly smiled.
Nell was steaming. When she saw that he actually had the nerve to laugh, it immediately added fuel to her anger and she was about to explode.
She struggled against him.
“Let me go! I’m done talking to you. I’m going to bed!”
She pried his hand off with all her might.
However, the man’s grip was like an iron pressing down on her. She was unable to break free no matter how hard she tried.
Nell was about to cry with anger.
Angry and frustrated, she finally gave up and turned away.
“Gideon Leith! You’re a bully!”
Gideon finally could not help but laugh.
“My little lady has quite a big temper. I just said a few words but you’re already aggravated? Hm?”
He let go of her waist and cupped her chin with one hand, forcing her to turn around.
Nell tenaciously resisted several times but ultimately failed. In the end, the man’s painful grip on her chin forced her to face him.
The little woman was full of anger. Her clear eyes were red at the moment, and a layer of moisture filled her eyes as if she was holding back tears. It was as if she would burst into tears if he said just one more word.
Gideon was momentarily tranced.
He looked at the pair of reddish eyes as if seeing through it to the depths of time. On a rainy night many years ago, a stubborn girl walked forward step by step on muddy water, refusing to look back no matter how much he cried after her.
His heart was silently touched.
He pursed his lips and released her chin before raising his hand to wipe away her tears.
“I didn’t even blame you for staying away from home these few days to work, but just saying a few words is enough to make you cry. Do you really feel that aggrieved?”
His tone softened with a hint of helplessness.
Nell did not want to cry.
