Gideon threw a nonchalant glance at Stephanie.
“Oh? What did she say?”
“She said that…” She hesitated for a couple of seconds. “Aunt Jean is worse than a kindergartener. That her eyes and fingers were only there for show, and that she’s arrogant…”
Jean began sobbing in grievance.
“Gideon, is that how a senior should be treated? Even if she doesn’t care about the Leith’s prestige, at least take into consideration the fact that I’ve suffered untold hardship raising you all these years. But do you see how she treated me?”
She felt sorrier for herself the more she spoke about it. Tears rolled down her eyes uncontrollably like a dam floodgate that had been opened.
Stephanie quickly handed over some tissue, not forgetting to console the woman simultaneously. “Aunt Jean, try not to be too upset. Elder Brother Gideon might feel sorry to see you in this state.”
Jean received the tissue and dabbed it on the corners of her eyes. “Will he? The vixen has already captivated his heart. Will he still think about anyone else?”
Gideon froze for a couple of seconds before rubbing his thumb between his brows.
“Aunt, why don’t you tell me what you said to Nelly?”
“I…”
Words stuck in her throat. She stuttered for several seconds before forcing these words out of her mouth. “What could I have said? You’ve been hiding the woman and not bringing her home. I just paid her a casual visit out of curiosity. Do you think I was going to bully her or something?”
Gideon smiled sarcastically. “Oh? Just a casual visit?”
“Of, of course!”
A guilty expression was written all over her face. Gideon thought it was funny.
“Well, Aunt, I’m sure you know what you’ve done. I’m letting this go since Nell has already fought for herself. I’m going to resume work if there’s nothing else. Make yourself at home!”
He went back to his seat after that without tending to the two women.
Jean was infuriated. She intended to say something else but Stephanie tugged at the corner of her sleeve to prevent her from doing so.
Stephanie smiled faintly while shaking her head. At this, Jean reluctantly swallowed her anger and stomped out of the room.
Jean left but Stephanie did not pick up her pace.
She remained rooted to the ground. The light khaki cashmere skirt and black sheepskin boots made her look young and fashionable.
Stephanie could feel her heart pounding erratically beneath the skin as she shifted her attention toward the indifferent yet handsome man sitting behind the office desk.
Eventually, the piercing stare made Gideon raise his head impatiently.
The pair of black eyes glared back coldly. “Anything else?”
Stephanie hesitated.
Her skin was so pale it made her appear sick all the time. She forced a faint smile under his cold stare.
“Nothing much. We’ve not seen each other for a while and I was surprised to learn about your marriage. Are you two… close?”
Gideon’s fingers clasped around the pen as he bored his eyes into hers.
Instead of ignoring the question, the corners of his lips twitched slightly into a cold smile.
“Miss Garrett, do you think that my wife and I are doing poorly?”
“…”
Stephanie was at a loss for words.
An awkward tension filled the air.
The corners of her lips twitched. “It’s not that. I figure Miss Jennings is a woman of strong character, and Lizzy is only so young thus I’m afraid they can’t get along well. When that happens…”
“It’s none of your business.”
The man’s voice laced with indifference stunned Stephanie. She looked at him in disbelief.
