“There’s nothing to worry about. Their goal was never you, but the Dragon Regiment that you’re connected to. Just like last time when they targeted Nell, but their real goal was the Leith family and the Bauhinias that she’s connected to.
“Vick, I thought that after surviving to this age and experiencing so many harsh battles, my heart was stone-cold, but I now realize that you’ve been melting the ice in my heart since I’ve known you. So please, from now on, take care of yourself for my sake and don't put yourself in any more danger, okay?”
Vickie looked up at him and saw genuine tenderness in his eyes for the very first time.
She was slightly taken aback and felt a slight pang in her heart. She could not understand why.
Reaching out to caress Gregory’s cheek, she noticed how much he had run himself ragged from all the work and stress recently.
Vickie assured him. “Okay. I’ll be careful from now on.”
Gregory finally relaxed and smiled.
She quickly added something else, as if she forgot to mention it earlier, “Ah, right, I wanted to tell you something.”
“What is it?”
“Leila is from the Chinese Association. I got caught by them because she planned it.”
Gregory raised his eyebrows and said, “I knew that.”
Vickie getting kidnapped was such a huge deal. How could he have been so careless?
A few days after she went missing, he found out that Leila’s identity was fake. Her real name was Amber and she acted as a spy for the Chinese Association in the chateau.
Seeing that Gregory knew about it, Vickie breathed a sigh of relief.
However, she was still slightly worried. “To think that someone like Leila, who has been with you for so many years, turned out to be a spy... Who knows how many other people could be spies… Gregory, maybe you should do background checks again.”
He smirked. “Why? Are you scared now?”
Vickie nodded.
He froze.
This woman used to be the most fearless person he knew. Not even a gun to her head or a knife to her throat would faze her. Now, she was admitting her fear so openly!
The fact that she had so easily admitted she was scared made Gregory’s heart ache.
He solemnly swore. “Don't you worry. Now that I’m here, no one can hurt you.”
Vickie shook her head.
“I’m not worried about myself. I’m worried about you.”
She gripped his hand and quietly said, “For people like us who walk a precarious and uncertain path, encountering danger is nothing new. It can happen any day, and I’m not worried about that. But what happens when there’s an enemy so close to you and hiding among your most loyal and trusted people?
“Take the last time you went on a business trip, for example. Someone placed a bomb in your room in the middle of the night! You were lucky you lived that day, but what if you didn’t? I don't want to think about that possibility, Gregory.”
Gregory’s eyes became downcast when she finished. Her words were a harsh reminder.
Even though he got Harold to perform a background check on everyone in the chateau after the initial incident, it was not a very detailed check.
There were too many things happening all at once, and he had no time to be more thorough.
However, now that the Chinese Association was about to collapse, it meant more people would seek to join the Dragon Regiment. The chateau would need more stationed guards.
It was high time for a large scale detailed background check.
He nodded. “I got it.”
