Lindsey was not very agile, her reactions slow. Before she could even make her next move, a glass cup had already struck her forehead.
She instinctively reached out to touch her forehead and felt a sticky sensation.
“Shaun, I told you Bailey is dead. Why did you hit me?”
Livid, Shaun pointed at her and raged, “You fool. Do you really think I wanted you to deal with Bailey? Who do you think you are? Are you even capable enough to compete with Bailey? I sent you to the lab to lure Caridee out so we could capture her in one fell swoop. What are you doing back here when the task isn't finished yet? All I did was hit you in the forehead. Why are you acting all pitiful here? Get back there right this instance!”
Lindsey looked at her brother with teary eyes, her voice trembling as she said, “Y-You never wanted to help me from the very beginning. You were just using me to lure Caridee out. How could you treat me like a pawn? I'm your own little sister. How could you do this to me?”
Impatience gleamed in Shaun's eyes. He turned to his bodyguard and said, “Throw her out. If she doesn't lure Caridee out, don't let her return to the Carter residence. Leave her to fend for herself out there.”
“Yes.”
The bodyguard hoisted Lindsey up by grabbing her arm and dragged her out.
“Shaun, you can't treat me like this. I am the legitimate heiress of the Carter family. You have no right to—Mmph!”
“Silence her.”
“Yes.”
Tucker watched as Lindsey was dragged away, a scheming glint flashing in his eyes.
He had been racking his brains to find a good opportunity for Astrid to come into the picture, but now it seemed that Lindsey could be of good use.
“Why are you still standing here? Until Caridee is completely under control, don't even think about me mobilizing forces to help you seize power.”
Shaun's warning sounded beside Tucker's ear, pulling his wandering thoughts back to reality.
“Got it. Mr. Carter, grant me two more days and I will certainly deliver Caridee to you. You should get plenty of rest. I'll come visit you another day.”
After leaving the ward, Tucker strode away from the villa.
On the tree-lined avenue, he immediately spotted Lindsey, who was squatting by the flower bed, crying.
“Ms. Carter, the reason your brother ended up like this is all thanks to Caridee. His eagerness to get his hands on Caridee to vent his anger is only human nature. You should put yourself in his shoes.”
Lindsey wiped her tears away and choked out, “I know. I want to help him too, but how can I get Caridee out of the Shurmer family's research base?”
Tucker chuckled lightly, “Then there's no need for a hostage situation. We just need to strategize and get her to come out willingly.”
Lindsey looked up at him, asking in a daze, “H-How do we strategize?”
A hint of a smile flashed in Tucker's eyes.
The fish is on the hook.
“I've found the extension number for the ward Caridee is in. Call her and let her know that Bailey might still be alive and is imprisoned. Ask her to come out and meet you.”
Lindsey hesitated for a while. “Will she believe me?”
“Shouldn't we at least give it a try to find out?”
After he finished speaking, Tucker pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, on which a series of numbers was written.
Of course, this number will never reach Caridee. Astrid will be the one to answer the call in the end. That way, she'll be able to impersonate Caridee to meet Lindsey. Then, I can use Lindsey to subdue Astrid and present the prey to Shaun.
“Here's the number. Whether you want to do this or not is up to you. If you want your brother to help you and have your back, you must first make him happy, don't you think? I assure you your brother will be thrilled as long as you hand Caridee over to him. Having him arrange your marriage alliance with the Carter family wouldn't be a problem at all.”
Lindsey slowly reached out to take the note, crumpling it into a ball and clutching it in her hand.
“All right. I'll give it a try.”
A cunning, triumphant smile tugged at the corners of Tucker's lips.
Right then, the phone in his pocket started ringing. It was a call from Philip.
“I have to take this.”
After speaking, he strolled off to one side.
“What's the matter, Dad?”
“Come back here right now.”
