Chapter 950 Sacrificing Eunice
Joseph shot a cold glare at his domineering elder brother seated below, his eyes emanating a frigid intensity.
Don't think I don't know what this old man is up to. He wants his son to rise to power, huh? That still depends on whether I agree or not. He's nothing more than a disreputable illegitimate child. I was generous enough to extend an opportunity for his entire family to revel in immense wealth and prestige. Now, he's grown audacious, relying on his son's talents, and coveting what doesn't rightfully belong to him. Such ambitions are truly reprehensible. So what if my son has mental challenges? The authority of the Rogers family isn't something that can be seized by a bastard child.
“Broderick, you may not have fully grasped the importance of the Fragrance Journal during your years away from the family, but after living in the Rogers residence for decades, you should comprehend its significance now, correct? Surrendering it to Catherine is tantamount to recognizing her as the family head. Are you all really okay with this?” Joseph said.
Broderick was at a loss for words.
Indeed, the Rogers family had a longstanding clan rule that dictated whoever possessed the Fragrance Journal would assume leadership of the Rogers family.
He and his trusted aides had been joining forces, opposing Catherine's rise to power these past few years. Are we really going to give up and compromise for the sake of saving Eunice?
His ultimate goal was to support his son's ascent to power. Eunice, on the other hand, was nothing more than a stepping stone paving the way for her brother.
The reason for saving her at this moment was because she still held some value that could be exploited for their benefit.
However, if the condition for saving her required compromising and agreeing to Catherine's ascent to power, he would rather not rescue her.
Don't blame me for being heartless, but I didn't endure all those humiliations and hushed condemnations behind my back due to my status as an illegitimate child in vain. I endured all of that hardship solely to pave my way toward future success. Now that victory is within reach, I'll never allow anyone to get in my way, including my daughter Eunice.
“Are you sure you want to support Catherine's rise to power? She has given birth to a child of a different family. Her heart is no longer with our family. Allowing her to take charge would be akin to entrusting our entire family to a stranger,” Broderick remarked.
No sooner had his words left his lips than a chorus of dissenting voices echoed around him.
“Don't let Catherine ascend to power.”
“Yeah! She violated our clan's rules, giving birth to a child of unknown paternity. She is unworthy of being the leader of the Rogers family.”
“If you insist on supporting her rise to power, have her kill that little bastard with her own hands first.”
“I agree!”
A somber glint briefly flickered in Joseph's eyes.
These people had always opposed Catherine's rise to power, but ironically, this played right into his hands.
Go ahead and oppose. It's better if this drags on. When I cure my son's illness someday, and he's capable of bearing the family's responsibilities, I'll discreetly appoint him as the head of the family. In the end, Catherine is nothing more than a pawn I've strategically placed to shield myself from the storm.
Broderick and Joseph were indeed blood brothers. They shared the same sentiment to sacrifice their daughters and protect their sons before ushering their sons into power at the right time.
Joseph uttered, “Looks like there's a bit of a mix-up here. You were the ones who asked me to trade the Fragrance Journal for Eunice, and now you're also the ones opposing Catherine's rise to power. So, what am I supposed to do?”
All the senior executives supporting Broderick were left speechless.
Joseph's gaze shifted to Broderick as he added, “Broderick, I can retrieve the Fragrance Journal and secure Eunice's safety. However, it's important to understand that the moment I hand over the Fragrance Journal to Catherine will also mark the day she assumes leadership of the family. Are you okay with that?”
Am I okay with that? Of course not!
Broderick abruptly shot up from his seat.
When all eyes were fixed on him, he realized his reaction had been too intense.
After taking several deep breaths to quell the anger in his heart, he spoke in a rigid tone, saying, “You're right. The Fragrance Journal is of great significance to the Rogers family and cannot be easily handed over. Eunice is too ignorant, provoking people she shouldn't have. She deserves to be in such a predicament. Actually, I wouldn't mind handing over the Fragrance Journal to Catherine and letting her take charge. However, given her association with the Luther family, her motives have become suspect. After much contemplation, it might be best to void this arrangement. Neither the Fragrance Journal nor the position of family head should be handed over.”
Inwardly, Joseph sneered coldly.
He recognized that Eunice still held some value for Broderick, and that very reason was why he couldn't allow her to live.
The current outcome was exactly what he wanted.
“It's good that you've come around, Broderick. If Eunice were to unfortunately die at the hands of the Luthers, we will not let this matter rest. I will definitely go to the Luther family and seek justice for her,” Joseph said.
Broderick stared at Joseph's pretentious face and trembled all over with anger.
He stood motionless for a few moments, managing to squeeze out the words “Thank you, Mr. Joseph,” through clenched teeth, before exiting the conference room with his subordinates.
Joseph observed Broderick's departing silhouette with a cold, inscrutable expression on his face.
A middle-aged man occupying a humbler position among the senior executives spoke up. “Mr. Joseph, I don't think he'll give up on Eunice so easily. Aren't you afraid he might pull some tricks?”
With a raised eyebrow and a mocking smirk, Joseph replied, “I'm not concerned about him taking action; it's quite the opposite. If he does decide to make a move, I'll have a legitimate reason to eliminate him. How can I not protect my own interests and allow others to infringe upon them? I'm even willing to sacrifice my own daughter, let alone others. By the way, have you made any progress in locating the Divine Healer I instructed you to find?”
“Don't worry, Mr. Joseph. The Divine Healer is renowned for their expertise in acupuncture. They claim that they can stimulate Mr. Harvey's brain, facilitating a gradual improvement in his condition.”
“Good. Get them to Yannopolis as soon as possible. Harvey's illness must be treated as soon as possible.”
“Roger that.”
After leaving the conference room, Broderick headed straight back to his living quarters.
He dismissed all his subordinates and retreated into his study alone, conversing with someone on the phone in front of the window.
“Mr. Kurt, time's up. Have you made up your mind?”
A soft chuckle resonated from the speaker. “Venom Valley is situated within Gregan. If you ask who holds the most power in all of Gregan, it would undoubtedly be the Rogers family. Now that you've personally reached out to me to discuss cooperation, I naturally wouldn't refuse.”
Broderick tightened his grip on the phone and inquired with a deep voice, “So, are you confirming your willingness to form an alliance with me?”
Kurt replied, “Indeed. A wise man adapts to the situation, and as my goal is to reclaim the Venom Valley, it's only logical for me to seek your support. However, let's establish a clear understanding. I'll help you in removing Mr. Joseph from the equation, and you, in turn, will assist me in reclaiming what rightfully belongs to me. Once this pact is sealed, there's no room for second thoughts. Should you attempt to back out, I won't hesitate to utilize the poisons detailed in the Encyclopedia of Poison to send your entire family into the afterlife.”
Broderick was well aware of Kurt's reputation for employing ruthless tactics.
In hindsight, he regretted partnering with such a malevolent and sinister individual.
However, his current situation is worrisome. Joseph had already harbored murderous intentions toward him, and if he didn't take action to defend himself, his only outcome would be to passively await death.
“All right, I agree to your terms. However, Joseph is a tough old bird to deal with. How can you assure me that you can take him down?”
Kurt chuckled lightly, his tone nonchalant as he replied, “I can't possibly lay all my cards on the table. Those are my lifelines. But I can give you a dose of reassurance.”
“What dose of reassurance?” Broderick quickly asked.
