Cane looked fine when he pushed his body off of the ground, he was no longer having a hard time breathing, but when he lifted his head to look at Iris, the sight of his eyes made her stop in her tracks from touching him.
"Na..." Cane whispered.
It was his face, it was him who was sitting in front of her, but Iris felt like she had lost Cane. What was going on? Why did his eyes turn red? That was the same color as... the lycan’s eyes.
"Na..." Cane whispered again, he moved closer to Iris, but out of instinct, she backed away from him, which made him frown at this gesture. He didn’t like her being away from him. "Don’t go, don’t be angry, I promise I will be good."
The furrow between her brows deepened when she read what he said. What did he mean by that?!
"Wh- what?"
"Na, I promise I will be good. I will not hurt people. I will not kill them." Cane moved closer to Iris and rested his head on her lap, as he guided her hand to caress his head. "I will be good, I promise you."
Iris was dumbstruck, what was going on right now?! What did Cane mean by his words? She couldn’t understand what he was talking about.
What had she done to him, which caused him to act so strangely right now?
"Cane?" Iris caressed his head dumbfoundedly, because he wanted her to do so, as he closed his eyes, ready to fall back asleep. "Cane, is that... you?"
Iris was not sure if she was right about her conjecture, but her mind told her the worst case scenario that she thought was too wild to happen actually happened.
"Cane?" Iris called his name again. "Cane, is that you? Answer me."
Cane opened his eyes again and they were still in the color of red, but he didn’t say anything, instead, he brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles gently, this gesture sent a shiver down her spine. His lips were so cold, his skin was so cold and deep down, Iris knew it was not her mate...
Iris didn’t know how to describe it, but she simply knew it, just like how she purified the black magic stones, or how she could sense dark magic, it just happened.
"This is not you, Cane..." Iris felt suffocated, she was at a loss. What had she done? What had she done to her mate?
Cane shifted his attention to Iris’ face and then let go of her hand, as he extended his hand to wipe away the tears that were now rolling down her cheeks without her knowledge.
"You can call me with whatever name you want, but don’t cry. I don’t want to see you cry." Cane brought his fingers, wet from her tears, to his mouth and licked them. "I never liked your tears."
"You are not Cane," Iris said, her whole body trembling. Where is he? Who is this person on her lap? Was this... "You are the lycan." The words came out as a soft whisper, her voice trembled at the end knowing she was right about it.
It was not Cane, it was the lycan that had been residing inside of him. If the lycan came to the surface and took over his consciousness, what happened to Cane?
What had she done to cause this?
