The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter novel Chapter 559

Chapter 559: THE STRANGE CONDITION

"What is going on, Cane?" Iris asked him when they were back in the comfort of their bedroom. It was not this luxurious bedroom that offered them peace, being in each other’s presence did. It was the absolute heaven for the two of them. It was a break that they needed. "Was it the mutineers?"

Iris could see that Cane’s wolf spirit was fine and this made her feel relieved, but she needed to see with her own eyes, to be sure, especially the spots with bloodstains.

Cane watched how worried Iris was and his gaze turned misty. He let her touch him casually, something he wouldn’t let anyone else do. He didn’t like to be touched, but after being with her this long, the thought of it didn’t bother him anymore, but of course, it only applied to her, since he wouldn’t let anyone else touch him so easily.

"Yes." Cane extended his hand and played with her hair.

"I will get you clean clothes, so you will feel comfortable." Iris immediately went to pick the clothes before Cane could say anything and the Alpha felt better to see how anxious his mate was. It was bad of him to feel delighted to see his mate like this, but it was a nice feeling to know someone was genuinely worried about him.

It was not that his pack members didn’t care about him, but of course, it was a different feeling when it was his mate.

Iris returned with a set of clothes for Cane and then went back to fetch a towel and a basin of warm water.

"You can ask someone to do it." Cane tilted his head to see how busy his mate was. Her face turned red because she moved around so much.

"I can do it." Letting someone else do it, meant letting them enter the bedroom. Iris didn’t like the idea, nor did Cane. "You did it for me a few times when I was sick, I can do it, too." There was a tinge of stubbornness to her voice, as she wanted to return the favor.

"Okay." Cane caressed her cheek and kissed the tip of her nose.

"Raise both of your arms." Iris knelt in front of Cane on the bed, so she could take off his shirt.

The Alpha obliged and Iris pulled his shirt over his head. "Do you want me to take off my pants too?" He asked in an even voice, but Iris could feel the ambiguity in his tone.

"L- later," she stuttered a bit, as her mind swerved in the wrong direction.

"Okay. Just let me know if you want me to take them off," Cane said casually.

Iris bit her lip as she had to make an effort to keep her mind clean. She focused on her task; wiping all the bloodstains from Cane’s body.

Despite his scars, the Alpha had a nice body, he was packed with muscles and his tanned skin glistened under the rays of the sunlight coming in through the window.

For a moment, Iris was captivated by the sight in front of her, before her face turned even redder.

"Do you like what you see?"

"Uh. Oh?" Cane’s question snapped Iris back to reality, as she didn’t even realize that she had been ogling at him. Ugh! This was so embarrassing. "Oh, right! Wh- what about the mutineers? What happened in the town? T- tell me everything."

Iris immediately wrung the towel and started to wipe Cane’s body, trying to focus on what he said.

"They are called Silver Warriors." Cane started to tell her. He knew that he had been holding back information from her, but then he realized he fell back to his old habits again, so he tried to communicate better with her.

Cane meant every word he said, especially when he said he was going to try and make this relationship work. At that time, he didn’t know whether he would develop genuine feelings for Iris or not. But, the fact they would spend the rest of their lives together was enough to make him decide that he wanted to make things comfortable for both of them.

But now, the effort was sincere. Cane really wanted to make things work between them, not out of necessity, but because he truly wanted it.

"They are the former warriors of the Silver River pack." Cane twisted her curls between his fingers, as Iris wiped his chest and neck. "Not all the former warriors from the Silver River pack joined the mutineers, but their amount is pretty significant, they can be troublesome."

"What are you going to do about them?"

"I am considering leaving this pack. There is nothing to be saved here if they refuse our help." Cane then mindlessly made a small braid with Iris’ hair. "We still need to think of the famine and the upcoming winter. With so many people needing to be fed, the black market alone is not a solution."

With seven packs to feed, they needed to find another alternative, therefore, losing one or two packs, which didn’t give them any benefits, could help in the long run.

Iris understood that, but she felt it was not right to leave all these people behind, especially the pack members, who were clearly heavily dependent on their help to survive. It felt wrong to abandon those people, who didn’t do anything wrong to them, just because some of them were against their help.

"Cane, I heard there is a certain condition that appeared in the people in this pack, so you can’t bring them to the other packs. What happened?" Iris remembered what Aliana said.
