If Rei wanted to play this game and acted as if he was a good servant, then Iris determined to treat him as one. Having additional servant would always be nice.
By then, Redmond realized where he got this familiar feeling. This actually not something that he had seen before, but actually something that he had experienced.
In the past, he was in Rei’s position, where he pledged his loyalty to Iris, but actually it was Cane, who gave him all the annoying task.
Seriously, you wouldn’t do anything without the alpha’s approval and by the time, you would learn that it would be faster to ask Cane directly rather than Iris, since the order would come from the alpha in the end.
Redmond really wanted to laugh and welcome Rei to the same fate.
What a fool of Rei to think he could ignore Cane and simply pledged his loyalty to Iris by neglecting the alpha? He was going to be Cane’s servant instead.
Redmond had been there and done that, needless to say he learned fast and had to facepalm himself once he settled with their dynamic, especially now when Iris openly refused to accept him. What chance did he have?
He didn’t know whether the situation turned to their favor or they only fell deeper into trouble. It was hard to tell.
"Upset?" Cane asked Iris when they returned to their bedroom. The problem had not yet solved completely, but the alpha decided to postpone it because it was already very late and Iris needed to rest.
Thankfully, her condition was still unknown. Rei didn’t seem to know about it either and they would keep it that way for as long as possible.
"I don’t like this." Iris snuggled against Cane’s chest, the only place she felt safe to talk about her feeling and what was in her mind.
They didn’t expect this to happen and the meeting turned out to be Rei’s declaration. All this time, they had been trying to keep their distance with him and was careful enough to not get him involved too deep.
Yet, here he was, putting all the responsibility on Iris and trapped her in. He forcefully shoved himself, even to the point he was willing to degrade himself to be able to stay with her. He was insane.
What was his end goal when it was well known that she was with Cane? She had Cane and no one would be able to replace his place.
"Do you want me to kill him?" Cane asked lightly, as if he was asking about what food she wanted to eat.
Iris peeked through her curls, she pouted her lips sullenly. "You know that’s not possible."
"It’s possible."
"At what cost?"
Rei was a vital figure in the Holy Kingdom and if he died, the whole continent would hunt them down, there was no way they would let it go easily, neither they would be able to get rid of them from their land.
No matter what the dispute between their faction, Rei was their founder, his existence was the foundation of the Holy Kingdom’s existence too.
Not to mention, with the black magic he held, killing him wouldn’t be an easy task.
"No. Don’t do it."
"It will worth it."
"No." Iris didn’t agree with him. "I am not going to put you in danger. There must be another way to deal with this."
Not only Cane, but their babies also the people who supported them would be put in the highlight and their lives would be at risk too. Iris was not going to take that route and she was sure, Cane was also aware of this, or else, he wouldn’t have talked about it with her and be done with his plan on his own.
Cane cupped her face, mirth in his eyes when he looked at his mate’s furrowed brows. "Now you do the thinking. Should I sit back and relax? After all, you have done a great job to lead those warriors and handle all the things that had to be dealt with when I was unconscious."
Iris scrunched her nose. "Are you going to shrug off your responsibility and give it to your pregnant mate?"
Cane laughed and kissed her lips before he went down to her neck, but then he stopped abruptly. A dangerous growl from his throat.
"Wh- what? What is it?" Iris looked around her, thinking they were under attack or there was unwelcomed guest in the room. It happened in the past, after all, she didn’t have a keen sense like Cane did.
"I hate this scent!" Cane groaned annoyingly. Rei’s scent still on her. "I will make your bath."
"What? Now? No..." Iris whimpered, she didn’t want to take a bath in the middle of the night.
"You only need to sit there and relax. I will do the work," Cane said softly in persuading tone, as he leaned over and kissed her lips.
