Daphne’s Point of View
With everything that has happened within the last year I feel like nothing should be able to surprise me anymore. Carolyn telling me that my mother sent a warning was a huge surprise though. I quickly tried to cover my shock because I did not want Carolyn to think that I was viewing her any differently. The young girl already admitted that she had issues with people questioning her gift. I have no doubt in my mind that Carolyn is speaking the truth. For one she never met my mother, and I highly doubt that she would know her name. The second reason is the last set of words my mother said to her about Scarlett being in danger. If I were the one in danger my mother never would have shown herself; however, Scarlett was the diamond in my mother’s eyes. There is nothing that my mother would not do to save her favorite child.
“Thank you so much for delivering that message to me Carolyn. I want you to know that I think you are incredibly brave. I am sorry that the spirit was not particularly nice to you.” I tell the young child. Leave it up to my mother to be condescending while asking someone for help. Even beyond the grave that woman knows how to grate my nerves.
“Thank you, Luna I hope I do not see her again.” Carolyn is still a little upset about the encounter.
“I hope you do not see that woman either. She sounds like a beast.” I could not help but throw a little jab in there, hoping that she can somehow hear my words.
“Now Carolyn I have a very grown-up question to ask you. Can you keep a secret?” The young girl nodded her head vigorously at my question, insinuating that she could keep things to herself. “This is a very big secret, even in our pack.” I explain to her. “There are other wolves like you here in our pack. Wolves that have special gifts bestowed upon us, and we can do great things. Theo and I help these wolves grow their talents and train them. Would you like to join our special training program Carolyn?”
The young girl considers the offer for a moment. “If there are other wolves like me than how come I have never seen them?”
“Well like I said we keep it a secret. Alpha and I do not want anyone to try to hurt our special wolves, or to exploit their peculiar talents. So, we train in private, and we keep it a secret, sort of like a super-secret club.” I try to explain to her why she has not seen anyone else’s talents.
“Carolyn I am a special wolf too.” I was grateful that Anita chose to speak up. I would never out another peculiar wolf without their permission.
“Really?” Carolyn asked her with big round eyes.
“Yes, really silly girl. I can help people and now certain animals have babies. I am also good with interacting with kids, and soothing grumpy infants.” It had taken Theo and I some time to confirm that Anita had a special ability. Finally, curiosity had gotten the best of me, and I struck up a conversation with her. She had disclosed that around certain people she felt a calm flow of energy that would lead her to placing her hands on the woman and boom a little while later she would learn that woman was pregnant. We had tried various methods of expanding her abilities and have been decently successful with it.
“Wow I did not know that. So, you train with Luna too?” Carolyn asked her. Anita confirmed that she did indeed train with me.
I then thought of Alpha Jerome and his Luna Alma. They are older and stepping down as leaders of their pack. Alma had once snuck in a gift for me when I was a child, and that makes it very difficult for me to believe that they would intend any harm for me, or any of my pack members. I do remember that at one time my father had hoped that their son would be Scarlett’s mate, but I do not think that caused any discord with them when it turned out that they were not fated mates. I also do not see any benefit to the Mission pack by betraying ours. They have plenty of land, and they have never seemed power hungry. Although I do not know their son and future Alpha Hawk well, he was raised by Jerome and Alma so I do not believe he would be malicious.
Alpha Axle is young and can act immature. His actions when he arrived here were rash, and not well thought out. Although I am still confused as to why he believes that Hannah is his mate, he did act as if he fully believed that she was the one. Is he being tricked, or is he the trickster? Since I do not know the answer to this, he is now suspicious in my mind. He also brought along his Beta Corey, who has been very quiet. Normally I would not deem this behavior suspicious but now I am curious if he is simply gathering intel.
Then there is Alpha Cole to consider as well. I do not know how well Caleb knows this man. He has experienced tragedy in his young life, could that have made him bitter? I did applaud his reaction to Hannah when he first arrived, but it could have simply of been a ruse. He did arrive without any soldiers, or even his Beta. I had assumed that he had felt comfortable enough to come by himself, but now I wonder if that was again a ruse to put us more at ease around him. For now, he does not have my trust.
Finally, there is Alpha Noah, and Luna Melissa. They of course are the obvious choice of people that I would suspect of betrayal. Beyond the fact that they both tortured me when I was a child, I know that Noah does not like that he did not earn the Alpha title. It is no leap of the imagination to see them causing a scene or trying some kind of trick to hurt our pack.
As I was mulling this new mystery over Caleb came into the room. I knew that I could not keep this information from him, but I hate that I am laying yet another problem at his feet.
“Caleb, we need to talk.”
