The Billionaire's Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband's Regret) novel Chapter 45

Kayden.

“I promise that I will make you happy for the rest of our lives. I will not give you a reason to cry, except for tears of joy. I will be the best husband and a wonderful father to our children. Just please… marry me. Choose me. Spend the rest of your life with me.”

“Yes, Kayden. I love you, too. And I will always choose you. I’m going to spend the rest of my life with you and our baby! I love you.”

I can hardly believe what I’m hearing.

There is no way I’d propose to Megan like this. But the evidence is as clear as day. This is my voice. I really drunk proposed to Megan.

“And you posted this on the internet?” I ask her, my voice shaking.

Megan's smile widens, a glint of triumph in her eyes. “Yes, Kayden. I wanted everyone to know the truth. You proposed to me, and I'm carrying your child. It’s one of my proudest moments, why wouldn’t I post it on the internet?”

“Because!” I roar angrily. My head spinning with a whirlwind of emotions—betrayal, anger, regret. I cannot believe Megan would be able to trick me like this. I glare at her. “You know I didn’t mean those things I said to you! I was drunk. I wasn’t of sound mind!”

“I wanted the everyone to know how happy I am and how much we love each other.”

“But we don’t love each other!”

“I love you! And I’m carrying your child!” she argues. “Isn’t that reason enough for you to marry me?”

“No!” I shake my head. “I thought… that my next marriage would be with someone that I loved.”

“And who do you love? Cassie?”

“Yes!” I answer blatantly. “I made the biggest mistake of my life when I asked her for a divorce.”

“Well, I will die first before I let Cassie win you over!”

“What am I to you, Megan? A trophy? A toy that you can play with whenever you want? You have deceived me all these years, making me believe that you were the one who saved me when it was Cassie all along. You manipulated the situation and now, you're using this pregnancy to trap me into a marriage that I never want.”

“When we were kids, you promised that you will take care of me for the rest of my life.” Tears roll down her cheeks. If they were real, I am not sure. I just cannot find it in myself to trust her anymore.

“I told you that because I thought you were the one who saved me! Even then, I never said it because I was in love with you! Do you know why I escaped from the hospital? Why I was in an accident with Cassie?”

She purses her lips, looking away from me. But I have to tell her the truth, if it’s the last thing I do. I’m done protecting her from feeling any sort of pain.

“It was because I couldn’t wait a second to be with her, and tell her how I feel.”

“Well, she can’t have you!” Megan snaps. “Are you really going to leave me alone to raise this child? Are you not going to give this baby your name?”

“I never said that!” I counter. “The baby can have my name and all the privileges that go with it. I will be its father and I will take care of it. But…”

“But what?” She raises her chin at me. “But you can’t marry me?”

I look at her straight in the eye and shake my head.

“Look inside yourself, Kayden. If you really don’t feel anything for me, why would you propose to me? Even if you were drunk, then it means… subconsciously, you must feel something for me.”

I comb my hair with my fingers. I shake my head. “No, Megan. I really don’t feel anything. I will take care of the baby. But no, I can’t marry you.”

Based on what I know about Megan, being married to her will be ten times more difficult than my first marriage with Cassie. With Cassie, I forced myself to resent her and overlook all the good things she did as my wife because I believed she had deceived me. Now, it's going to be a similar situation with Megan, but without any love or attraction on my part. And this time, I am certain that she manipulated me into marrying her.

“Really?” she wipes her tears angrily. Then she dials a number on her phone.
