"Little tramp! Get out here, now!" Mrs. Simmons, the landlady, stormed into Kara's room with a fury that could scare off a bear.
When Kara saw Mrs. Simmons barge into her room, her face went pale. "Mrs. Simmons, how could you barge into my room like that? You... Ah!"
Before Kara could finish her sentence, Mrs. Simmons slapped her across the face.
"How dare you hit me!" Kara's face twisted in anger and disbelief.
Being the school's darling, Kara wasn't used to taking aggression. That was a first.
"Why can't I hit you? Do you have any idea how much trouble you've caused me? You knew Freya was a high-society belle, yet you kept spreading rumors about her around the neighborhood. You've made an enemy out of her for me. How could you be so malicious?" Mrs. Simmons accused in a voice laced with bitterness.
Kara's face turned all shades of angry as she shot back, "And who can prove I started those rumors? Why are you blaming me?"
"You know damn well if you were the one! It's always the same with you jealous types, but I never thought you'd drag me into your schemes, trying to make an enemy out of Ms. Dawson and play the saint! The world doesn't work like that. Now, pack your things and get out. I won't have tenants like you!" Mrs. Simmons was known for her fiery temper.
