Chapter 186
“Kris,” Thalassa whispered, her heart pounding inside her chest.
Kris took slow steps toward her, his expression utterly broken as he stared at her. “I should've known this was too good to be true.”
His breath hitched in his throat, his heart squeezing so painfully that he thought it was going to implode. He wanted to believe his eyes were deceiving him, but the evidence was right in front of him.
His fingers twitched at his side, his jaw clenching painfully. “Getting back together with me...everything you said about letting the past go and giving me a second chance... I should have known it was all a lie. You lied to me. Why?”
Despite her racing heart, Thalassa glared at him. This wasn’t how she wanted him to find out about her plans, but she refused to let herself feel guilty.
“What did you believe, Kris?” she hissed. “Did you really think I could ever forgive your mother after everything she did to me? After she had me assaulted to make you believe I cheated on you? After she framed me and sent me to jail for something I didn’t do? After she had me attacked, killing our unborn child?!”
Kris slowly shook his head, his expression sorrowful, his voice hoarse as he spoke. “No... I knew you could never forgive her...but why not be honest with me? Why use me like I was nothing but a pawn in your plan?”
At that moment, the lights flicked back on. Kris slowly turned and walked out of the room, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces. As if that wasn’t enough, his phone rang as soon as he stepped out.
It was a call from Smoke.
“What is it, Smoke?” Kris asked, his voice tight.
“Mr. Miller, I have information about who was responsible for the attack on your ex-wife that led to the death of your unborn child.”
Kris swallowed hard. “Who was it?”
Inside Linda’s bedroom, Thalassa stood frozen, unable to move, locked in place by the sudden turn of events.
“Oh my goodness, was that Kris?” Luisa asked through the earpiece.
“Yes,” Thalassa whispered, even though all she wanted to do was scream.
She had thought today would be the day she finally gathered the evidence to have Linda arrested, but fate had played such a cruel joke on her.
“She knew..." She mused through gritted teeth. “Someone, she found out she was being investigated. That's why she's had all the evidence removed.”
Looking at how the safe had been left open in haste, she was sure the evidence had been removed just a few minutes ago. But Linda, Cynthia and Susan had been downstairs all this time so who could she have sent to take the evidence out.
“I can’t believe that woman's is getting away again!” Luisa screamed, followed by the sound of something shattering. Luisa cursed, “Oh shit.”
“What?” Thalassa asked.
“Uh, Lassa, I think I just accidentally pressed the signal telling the police to come in.”
