Chapter 187
“Kris, what is wrong with you?” Susan demanded as she stormed toward her brother. “How can you tell them to arrest Mum?”
“Yes, Kris. How can you even think your mother is capable of something like that?” Aunt Cynthia added.
“I said she's no mother of mine,” Kris hissed.
Linda's heart was pounding as panic surged through her. No, no, no. This couldn’t be happening.
“But... but... Kris...” Her lips trembled as she took hesitant steps closer to him. “Son, how can you say something like that? How could you even think I would ever do something like that?”
Baring her teeth, she turned her hateful gaze on Thalassa. “All because of that woman!”
She slowly returned her gaze to Kris, desperation filling her eyes. “I can’t believe you trust her over your own mother. She made a fool out of you. She made you believe she’d forgiven you, but it was all a ploy to exact her stupid revenge on me. She used you. How can you trust anything she says after all this?”
Hesitantly, she reached up to cup his face. “I am your mother, Kris. I gave you life and all the love in the world. Are you really going to believe something like that about me because of this woman?”
Kris’s expression didn’t soften, as she'd hoped. Instead, he grabbed her wrists and tore her hands away from his face, as if her touch disgusted him. Linda’s heart sank.
“My decision has nothing to do with Thalassa. I’ve been having you investigated for a while now. You’ve fooled me enough, Linda. Not anymore.”
His furious eyes locked on the chief officer. “What the hell is she still doing here? I said, take her away!”
“Yes, she’s going to come with us, sir,” the officer replied, then paused to explain. “But only for interrogation, as she’s a suspect in crimes related to human and drug trafficking. We can’t arrest her based on your claims because no report has been filed for that specific case, and no warrant has been issued, which also requires evidence of the crime.”
“The report will be filed right after here, and you should receive the evidence before you're done interrogating her. Then, you can lock her up immediately.”
The officer nodded. “Very well. Mrs. Miller, you need to come with us.”
“No!” Linda shrieked.
Up until this point, she had hoped this was some kind of nightmare. But seeing the hatred in Kris’s eyes and his determination to put her in jail, the reality began to hit her—she was losing control over him.
She couldn’t allow that. He was the apple of her eye, and she would go crazy if she lost him.
“Son, you can’t let them take me. I’m your mother! You can’t do this to me!” she pleaded, trying to hold onto his arm, but he shook her off.
“Ma’am—”
“I am not going anywhere with you!” Linda said fiercely. “I am not a criminal. I won’t allow anyone to accuse me of something I haven’t done.”
The chief officer pressed his lips into a grim, impatient line. “Currently, you’re not under arrest, only detained for interrogation. At least until charges are filed against you based on your son’s claims. If I were you, I’d come peacefully and willingly. Otherwise, we’ll be forced to put you in handcuffs and take you by force.”
