Chapter 213
While he was still hugging his son, Kris's phone rang. Annoyed by the interruption at such an important moment, Kris reluctantly released Alex and pulled out his phone.
Seeing that it was his lawyer, he excused himself, stood up, and walked a short distance away to answer the call.
Thalassa also noticed the caller ID, and her eyes followed him. She could see the tension building in his expression as he spoke to his lawyer.
When the call ended, she stood and met him halfway, concern etched on her face. "Is something wrong?"
Kris sighed. "It's my mother. My lawyer has been trying to arrange for her transfer to prison and to push her cases to court, but he's been meeting resistance. I have to go back to Baltimore to sort it out."
Though his voice was emotionless, Thalassa wasn’t fooled. She could see the pain in his eyes. This was affecting him more than he wanted to admit.
She gently cupped his face in her hands, looking into his eyes. "Kris, I can have my lawyers handle it, or I can go back and take care of it myself. You don't have to do this. She's still your mother, and—"
"A mother who tried to destroy my life and hurt the woman I love?" Kris gave a bitter smile. "A mother who caused the death of my child—our child? She might be my mother, but she’ll face justice for every crime she's committed. I have to do this. For us, and for our child."
Thalassa nodded slowly, realizing she couldn't change his mind. Though she had a bad feeling about him handling this himself, knowing how much it would affect him, she knew that this was what he needed to feel closure. She couldn't stop him.
"When are you leaving?" she asked softly, already missing him though he was still with her.
"Tomorrow morning," Kris replied. Noticing the disappointment in her expression, he quickly added, "I'll be back as soon as it’s taken care of. I promise. I can't wait to spend more time with you and our son."
He cupped her face and kissed her gently on the lips before pulling her into a warm embrace. Thalassa leaned against him, wondering what the hell was this uneasy feeling that had settled in her chest.

Later that night in Baltimore, Karen was driving to her mother’s house after leaving Henry’s apartment. She’d told him about the bag containing incriminating evidence against Linda, which she had hidden at her mother’s house, and Henry had made her realize why it wasn’t safe there. The risk was too high.
Now, she was heading to her mother’s house to retrieve the bag and bring it to Henry. He’d assured her he could hide it somewhere much more secure.
As Karen pulled into the driveway, she switched off the engine and stared at the house. The lights were on, but she was certain her mother was already asleep. Her mother always went to bed early, a habit that worked in Karen's favor tonight.
Unlocking the door with her key, Karen stepped inside. Bridget, the maid, emerged from the kitchen. "Good evening, Miss Karen. Your mother is—"
"Yeah," Karen cut her off abruptly, brushing past her and heading straight for the stairs.
